Where To Get Good Resources
by Guest- 5 replies

I am so impressed with this site! So glad I joined! The only problem is I spend too much time browsing all the different posts! I have resorted to eating my dinner in front of the computer! I am in awe of all the different ideas people have but also glad to see that many people have the same worries as me (although as an NQT I worry about everything!) My main question today is where are the best places to get resources from? I work in the nursery class of a primary school and have found that the Maths resources are particularly poor. Also the outdoor resources are not great which makes outside planning hard! Are there any good catalogues for early years? Has anyone g…

Things That Go Bump In The Night

A Mum approached me yesterday, asking whether we had any books on dragons in nursery, as her son has been having terrible nightmares about them for at least a week, & she wondered whether the idea had come from a book. We established that there were no such books in nursery & are trying to get to the bottom of this. She is very concerned as he refuses to go up to bed & parents are settling him downstairs before transferring him to bed once asleep. He says the dragon sits on his curtains. They've tried taking the curtains down to no effect & are considering re-decorating & moving the furniture around. I asked whether it was possible he'd seen somethin…

Bubble Mixture Recipe - Please Help!
by Guest Tredworth- 6 replies

Can anyone help please? I have tried (with the children) to make bubble mixture following the recipe given in "The Little Book of Messy Play". It is as follows: 2 cups washing up liquid, 6 cups water and 5 tablespoons of sugar. We were all really disppointed when the mixture was too thin to use with bubble wands. I've tried playing around with the quanties and leaving it overnight but with no improvement. There are loads of recipes on the web, but I'd like to find one which is reliable so that the children can make it. If you have a recipe you know will work. Please let me know. Thanks!

Want an electric pencil sharpner as sick of little rubbishy ones breaking. Not sure how many milimetres the 'chubby' pencils we use are. Are they 8mm? One sharpner I've seen on net takes these. Any recommendations of where to shop (in shops or on line)]Thanks Zim

We used lentils today in our Tuff Spot for the children to fill various bottles and containers using different kinds of spoons and implements. They had a great time and really enjoyed the activity. However, another member of staff arrived at lunchtime and said that she had read somewhere that we shouldn't allow children to use raw lentils as they are toxic. I have checked on the packet and can see no information. I know raw kidney beans are toxic, but have used lentils many times before for craft activities, or for use in home-made musical shakers and have never given it any thought. We do have one or two three-year olds in Nursery who are often quite keen to …

Grants For All Weather Surface
by Guest- 2 replies

Hi everyone Does anyone know of any grants available to provide outdoor all weather play surface? We are a village Pre School, using a church hall -and our church (landlord/council) have been really amenable in ensuring the children in the group have a nice room and facilities. Our outdoor garden is all grass and doesn't dry out at this time of year until the hot summer months, so we rarely are able to use it. However, we have been given the 'go ahead' by the church to resurface two thirds of the grassed area with all weather play surface, and as you can imagine it is going to cost a fortune - much more than we can expect our parentsto raise. Any contacts would be welcom…
