Story Club

A colleague and I are starting a story club for Nursery and Reception children, as an afterschool activity. Chosing some stories to read to the children and then do some roleplay is our initial idea. Does anyone have ideas we could use to add variety? Anything would be much appreciated. Thanks. :1b

Hi! This may seem odd  but every year, for whatever class I work in, I buy a new book for the classroom collection on my birthday! :1b As this is rapidly approaching, can anyone recommend a new or recent title suitable for school nursery? Cheers Madmum

Hello, My Y1s did some instruction writing last week - they need a wee bit more practice! So, I was thinking of doing some whole class baking this week. In school we have a microwave and a tiny oven in which you can only cook half a dozen fairy cakes at a time. I was therefore thinking of using the microwave except that we don't have any baking 'tins' that I can think of suitable for it. Do you think that empty (and clean!) containers that you get from a take out meal would work? I know they're dishwasher proof cos it says on the bottom! I have tons saved for something useful. If not do you have any other suggestions? I'd test it at home except that I do…

Recently we had a visitor to our setting that thought we should have a "Science area". What would you put into this area. Bearing in mind that we are a pack away setting, so things can't be left out. Things like experimenting with various things may need a staff member present but what sort of things can be left for the child to discover? Thought of things like magnets, magnifying glasses, kalaidescopes, prisms, discovery bottles, fir cones, pebbles, etc.that are usually out. Not sure what else - any ideas would be gratefully received!! Thanks Sue J

We are wanting to purchase a shop front that can also be used for other things such as reception desk, post office - in fact lots of different role play scenarios. Do any of you have suggestions as to what to buy or not buy? Thanks

Tyres For Outdoor Small World
by Guest- 12 replies

Hi Am after advice! I have some tyres which I would like to use as a group to fill with different materials to create an outdoor permanent small word area (ie: one filled with compost, gravel, bark chippings etc) but I don't know what to use as a liner for them so the contents don't spill out from underneath. I need it to be tough enough so that if we decide to move the tyres it won't tear. It doesn't need to be able to stop weeds growing through it as we only have slabs or the rubbery wet-pour surface in our outdoor area. The other issue is how to secure the lining to the tyre. I have looked at things like 'No More Nails' and other waterproof glues but th…

I know someone has posted about this before. Can you help? Are steamers any good for keeping carpets in nursery under control? We have ours cleaned at the end of each term but they get filthy in the meantime. Want to by a steamer so we can keep it under control until the end of term. What do you think? Which make do you recommend?
