I am trying to extend our story time ....I have introduced a song sack so that children can pick a prop out of a bag and we sing a song that relates to the prop....this works really well with our group...some have challenging behaviour and some have little or no english. Im thinking a story sack would be lovely but I have no idea which story to start with or how to use this in a session i am hoping that some training will become available locally but untill then I would like to do something about it now!!! so if you …

We have the usual different sizes of buckets, spades, sieves, rakes as well as a wheel and sometimes put in animals. We have experimented with dry fine sand and then wetting it a few weeks later. Is there anything else we could try? In the outside sand tray we have had shells and stones.

Reception Friendly Software

Hi, As both ICT coordinator and a Foundation Stage teacher at my school I have asked if we could purchase some software that the Reception children could use to support their learning and have been told to cost it up as there is money available for this (I've not been told how much - I have to put my case forward!). So I was wondering what you would reccommend. Ideally we would love some software that we could put on all the computers in the unit to support the children with thier phonics (mainly phases 2 - 3) that the children could use during free flow activities and also some PSRN software. At the moment we have 2simple maths city, but very little else and the …

I have a tendency to read and follow many blogs and sites for early years enjoying the wide range of activites and experiences we can give to the children through play.. and this came up in one of them it is actually from Perth WA ( my son is there!) and makes think I would love to have a go at making some of them for outdoor play.. or find a parent who with instructions could help. There is more info there about how to make the wonderful instrument he uses/ made.. enjoy.. I did..

Does anyone use numicon, with the activities and everything and find that it doesn't correspond with the EYFS and Profile statements for PSRN? It seems to me that it is great in that it develops a really deep understanding of number that is very secure and embedded and can them be built on later to develop concepts of calculating, decimals etc. The problem I have is that in developing this deep understanding, a lot of time is spent on becoming familiar with the plates and it goes much more slowly than is necessary to 'cover' the EYFS statements, particularly in calculating. Lots of the EYFS calculating statements seem to be addressed in Numicon in Year 1. Am I mistake…

Hi everyone I wondered what others use to display mark-making materials for toddlers/two-year-olds. In our Pre-school Room (3-5's) we have a wooden trolley of resources - all the usual pens, pencils, biros, crayons, plus sellotape, scissors, hole punches, paper, envelopes etc etc. But we're struggling to provide appropriate mark-making bits for younger ones. We don't really want or need a big trolley like the older children, but want more than putting a few pencils and paper out on the table. Does anyone have any ideas of how to provide these kind of resources for 2 year olds to select themselves? Thanks Beehive

Jigsaw Puzzle Display
by Guest terrydoo73- 4 replies

We have a large cabinet with 3 shelves on it and to be honest our children are not making use of the jigsaws available. We have put the jigsaws in the butter/margarine type tubs with photos on the outside to say what is inside. We think we need to get a different system of display but are limited to space. Can anyone advise what they do? We did see one recently in another playgroup that used a plate display stand just set on the ground and thought it was good but it really limits you to a maximum of say 4 jigsaws out at any one time and the jigsaws need to be the wooden board type - we don't really want to give up the many good jigsaws we have built up just to go out …
