This is my final ‘coffee-break’ in a series that I have written, about getting #BackToBasics when it comes to approaches that we use to support our children’s learning. I’ve discussed the importance of a sound knowledge of child development (and doing away with ‘progress data’), the fact that we don’t sing nursery rhymes as much as we used to and the benefits of taking risks in play, with particular reference to climbing trees. This week I wanted to provoke some thought on the topic of a good old-fashioned chat! It’s never been more difficult to remain ‘present’ with our friends and families when we are spending time with them (whether that be in person or v…

We have previously highlighted how podcasts are a useful way to keep yourself up to date with the latest news, theories and discussions in education. Now it is the turn of the article or blog post as a way to get your CPD fix without feeling overwhelmed. Just like a podcast, an article is a way to connect you with new ideas. They can reinvigorate your practice, encourage you to explore with links to websites and books for further reading, or help you to reflect on what is already good in your provision, and what could be improved. With a podcast you can multitask – listen and do! But with an article you have to sit for a moment and give it your full attention. …

Hi my name is Katie and I work in an early years setting in Cumbria. I am nearing the end of my CACHE level 3 Early Years Educator course and have been asked by my tutor to engage in discussions with my peers about the main theoretical perspectives on professional development. Below is description of my current knowledge involving the reflective practices of Kolb and Gibbs. I wondered if there were any other view points or theories on reflective practice that are useful for early years practitioners? Any advice appreciated, thanks in advance :) The two main theories of professional development are Kolb’s learning cycle and Gibb’s reflective cycle, both of wh…

The world is filled with uncertainty, educators are on the frontline, and anxiety is a familiar feeling for everyone. When everything around us is wobbling, it can be hard to concentrate, to reach beyond the things we have to do each day, to do anything extra. One of our roles as educators is to keep up to date, to keep growing and learning ourselves, so we can support the children we work with to grow and learn too. In times like these though, CPD might just be the extra bit that we haven’t got the capacity for. Enter the podcast. A friendly voice in your ear you can listen to wherever you are – whether it’s travelling back from work, or doing the hoovering, or…

If you’re looking for a resource to add to your Safeguarding training, do have a look at the free ‘A Beginner’s Guide to Safeguarding’. It has been created by Safeguarding expert, speaker, and author Ann Marie Christian to support childminders, nurseries and schools in having necessary conversations about safeguarding. You can read more about the guide, and download it, from here. Are there any other resources that you use to support your Safeguarding training in your setting that you can share here?
