Feeling Like An Old Bag!

What a terrible day!

From 9 until 3 all I seemed to do was nag....poor children I know they're tired and I am, but they were such hard work today. I really need to be more positive on Monday, felt really sorry for those children who always follow instructions and do as asked.

Anyone else had a day like mine??

Hi Annie. Don't do yourself down. I bet you do a fab job and we all have 'off' days.

I have spent a happy half hour this afternoon making a laminated board with positive pictures on it. I am going to use mine with my staff team as we all feel a bit 'down' at the moment and under pressure too. My idea is that alongside doing post-it obs of the children we will try and observe a member of staff doing something great, good practice, something commendable. Then when they aren't looking we will stick the postpit on our 'team' board to encourage them! (Don't panic, there are only 4 of us and we need 'bigging up!'.) Could something like this work for your little ones? Make a board with smiley faces on it and pictures of tidying up, sitting nicely (ooh I'm sure you can add to this list) and then catch them doing something good and stick a post it on with their name. Then you could just show that child their post it on the board or at circle time show all the children if that were appropriate. I know it looks as though its about the children but its about you too. I know how hard it is to focus on the positive when it feels like all you do is nag... Links well with PSED and would be highly motivating!! Actually, think I'm just off to make one myself! (Hmm, does it work with teenagers at home I wonder :o )

Enjoy your weekend and start next week afresh....

Thanks everyone!

LJW I like that idea think I'll be making one this weekend.

No, I promise I'm not always like this. I think, as I said its because I'm so tired too (just been told I have an underactive thyroid). Will have a relaxing weekend and then go back fresh on Monday.

Dear Old Bag,

yep I think we all go through days like that sometime and its very easy to get snowed under with all the negatives. You have obviously recognised why - as you said you have been diagnosed with an under active thyroid and this is possibly why you felt like this, on top of the fact that its the end of the week, Friday blues and everyone has the right to feel out of sorts at times - recognising that you are/have been is the important part as someone else said. So forget today, and think two days off and get on with how you are going to tackle Monday. Some days just don't go to plan and we cannot be on top of the game all the time - neither can the children.

Chocccies, wine, crisps whatever takes you fancy - enjoy and think of all the good things in life.

IT'S THE WEEKEND, xD  Well that's what I have been telling myself since this morning. I recognise the feeling, nag mania. :(

Tell the children how lucky they are, you nag because you care. They are much luckier than my lot, I got a new puppy last week and I don't know why :( but I've been 'commanding' the children, sounding like the 'SIT' lady all day. :( I'm going to take him into preschool next week so that the children can meet him and learn that I'm just a bit confused. :oxD

aha! the underactive thyroid heh??? make sure thy keep on top of it........I was sleeping 16 hours a day at my worst :o ............still 'fiddling' with my prescription, so good luck........but I do feel a lot better than I did!! xD

my day?? fab for the most part...........children playing dodgeball on the patio in the sunshine, lots of giggling and laughter, great snack time where everyone ate all the food without spilling it all ove rthe floor, a new child started with us........and not one tear(!)................the little boy who used to cry when he had 'performed' in his nappy is blossoming......hooray, hoooray...........my daughter popped in to show the children her new baby (ahhhh, oohhh, innie LIIIITTTEEEEELLLLL!)...........soooooooo lovely, could eat him up....then took the children out onto the park for football........again. loads of laughter, shreiking with fun............superb!! and then, just as i was about to lock up for the day, all tired and ready to go home for a nice cup of tea......had a phone call from a local organisation saying our landlord had given them permission to use the building for the weekend, so i'd 'haveto put all the stuff away' ggggrrrrrrrrrrrrr, took me two hours, and i could have screamed..............'cos I'll also have to go down there on Sunday night to put it all back out again.time I had planned to use for uni work.......but, well, we had the most FABULOUS day and i'm not going to let that lot spoil it!

what age do you have nag bag? That'll be your name now you realise that!!

I've definitely had days like that and I try to make a joke of it and start doing it on purpose saying things like 'for goodness sake stop sitting so nicely, you there, stop smiling, hey I said no neat writing' etc and usually it's enough to pull me back!

i love what you do Hello kitty :(

Ive had a bit of a week of ups and downs.Had visit from new young early years advisor who is big in to higscope and made me feel like crap!!! and our outstanding for enjoying and achieving last year wasnt important!!Had first uni lecture yesterday was out 11.45 got home 7.30 absolutly shattered feeling abit low and doubting myself the pace was so fast and intense then after asking my tutor a question about my targets she used so many big words some id never heard of and I came away feeling i was so thick and totally out of my depth xD

However after meeting my mentor this morning and chatting she put it back into perspective for me  then having a wonderful afternoon session out in the garden with the children in the lovely sunshine i feel better. xD

However called in the local supermarket for wine and chocolate!! Just had a bath and going to settle down for Rebus :( So cheers :(

So come on lets chill enjoy the weekend it will be all waiting for us on monday but thank god for the children and each other eh?

Hello Kitty, I'm in Reception (been teaching Y2 for 11 years so this is my first half term)

Narnia-16 hours!!! Oh my goodness, I had 12 last night, OH left me to see this morning. He only needs about 4 hours a night but is very sympathatic. It was the Gyno who gave me the results of my blood test (long story) but he had to discuss treatment with the Thyroid specialist and was then going to put prescription in the post......probably stuck in a postage bag somewhere until Wednesday now!!!

Feeling more positive today, went shopping with Mum and Sister. Now looking forward to a night in front of the TV :o

If it helps - I've known other teachers who have gone from y2+ down to reception and they have found it really hard. By y2 they're that much better at sitting still and being able to listen aren't they? Nothing to do with previous teachers I don't think, I think that up until at least 6 they are just not able to - they're not meant to be sitting still are they? They're meant to be off learning by doing naturally. IMO of course :)

Sorry I am in the 'they shouldn't be in full time ed. so young' brigade!

Anyway my point is that perhaps you are feeling like a nag because you've been used to children that can sit down for long periods or whatever. So it's not you or them it is just the circumstance IYSWIM?

I'm the reverse, I've always worked (20 years+) with pre-schoolers and now I have 7+ year olds to childmind I feel like all I do is nag them! My pet 'hate' is that my weenies manage perfectly well all day with out the older ones then after school the older children feel the need to do everything for them or at least talk them through! Like meal times I get sooooooooo fed up with the little ones being told where to sit, which cutlery to choose etc etc AAAAARGH!!!

Phew, and relax!
