My tutor used to call it 'the threeness of three'-not very technical but meant a concrete understanding of value

Oooer, I've never heard that term before! Maybe I'll make it my word of the day tomorrow! :o

useless fact of the day

subitize, comes from the Latin, subitus, which means sudden, hence its meaning for 'suddenly knowing' how many items there are without counting.

You may want to see if its just the dot pattern on the die (eg if they play a lot of games) that the child recognises or whether or not he/she recognises any group of 6 (eg in a line or random order) without counting.

It just goes to show we do learn a new thing every day!!

Though I learn at least 5 from this site alone. :o

Sort of related to this topic. I have a child in my class who is year1 and good at numeracy. However, he cannot recognise numbers beyond about 8. If you show him e.g. 13, he will count, presumably along a number line in his head, and tell me 13. has anyone else met this and how did you help them recognise the number?

And do you learn this by counting or subatizing, Sal?
