Pointer Stick Trouble!

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

I need some help! During my first year teaching practice i was in a reception class and the teacher had this fab pointer stick for big books. It was a hand shape with one finger pointing and i have since seen this in videos of early years settings during my training. I foolishly forgot to ask where she got this from as finishing my degree seemed so far away. As i am about to start my first post i am keen to access one (by the way it it nothing fancy, just a hand lamintated and fixed onto a stick)

I have searched everywhere! does anyone now where i get get a copy of this to make my own. It it obviously a literacy teaching resourse-i just cant find it!!!

Bet this makes no sense what so ever!!! You know your sad when you search hours for a pointer stick!! (The kids loved using it too-honest!!) :o

Hi alysha

You're making perfect sense - I' a fellow sad person!

Use google images to find a pointy finger picture. That's what I did. I laminated the picture and stuck it on to the end of a bamboo stick The children in my class love it and have even named it 'Mr pointy stick' !!!

As someone who is coming to the end of her first year of teaching as an NQT, the best advice is to probably whip one up yourself - saves on the hassle of searching for one! Made my own on my very first day in my Reception out of a stick and some sparkly card (used an arrow instead of a finger!).

Started off the year thinking that it would be nice to have all these nice accessories but was also quick to realise that as much as I love teaching, my own bank account shouldn't be soley responsible for my every teaching aid!!!! Bought the essentials that will follow me through my career, but then have also learnt that the best way is often to be very creative yourself and just throw stuff together - keeps the kids on their toes and also gives them some examples of what they can attempt to make themselves!!!!

Hope that helps slightly!!!!

I'm pretty sure the pointy finger I had came from Hope, if not it was LDA. It wasn't expensive in itself but P&P almost makes it a non starter as an individual purchase. And I kept it out of reach of the children, as some bright spark used it as a weapon!!!

I used to refer to it as my magic finger, as I know my head was concerned that pointing fingers were rude! Some of the teachers had magic wands, but I think the multiple points on the star are confusing

I drew round my own hand -index finger and thumb out stretched and other three fingers bent in (at the first joint) towards my hand and then attached it to a chop stick. Hope that makes sense.
