Eyfs

Hi everyone,

I'm an NQT this year working in a one form entry reception class. My head handed me the EYFS document this morning and told me that I need to work from this now! Help!

I don't know what i'm doing with it! Has this replaced the foundation stage profile? Are there any planning or assessment proformas for it? And how does it affect the planning?

Sorry this is waffley, it's just been a lot to take in today!

Firstly don't panic.. not a reception person myself but I am sure someone will come and help you with a bit of info..

 

meanwhile as said look in the resource library. and do a forum search for EYFS.. it has been discussed so much over the last year that it will probably be a very long read!!

 

EYFS replaces the foundation stage profile, and all settings are will be using the same from September, it really brings together several documents together under one umbrella, Birth to 3, foundation stage profile and the standards to follow.

 

The CDrom with the document has examples of planning on it, but most of us are finding that with a little tweaking our current planning still is relevant.

Hi Rachel,

It seems a shame that you haven't been offered any local authority training for the EYFS yet. Nevertheless, don't panic!

 

The first thing I suggest you do is to briefly look through the cards and get a feel for how the whole thing is organised. Once you've got the idea that there are four themes (Unique Child, Positive Relationships, Enabling Environments, and Learning and Development), each with a principle and four commitments, you can start to see how your curent provision fits into them. I'm willing to bet most of what you already do will be in the documents somewhere!

 

The second thing I'd do is look in the Practice Guidance document, and do the same! You'll see that the six areas of learning are the same (although Maths has had a name change), but that some of the aspects have been amalgamated. You'll also see that the ages and stages go from birth now. It is useful to see where your children have come from, but you'll work mostly with the 30-50 months and the 40-60+ months bands (the latter includes the ELGs).

 

There! Once you've done that, you'll have made a good start :o

Hi - I think the most impact eyfs will have for our setting is how we set up activities each day - ie these need to be selected by the children not the adults - from a pre-school point of view and having to get things out and put away, ensuring resources are easy for children to make their own particular choice will be a challenge for us because of storage. Purchased a book today by Vicky Hutchin "supporting every childs learning across the EYFS" - looks really good and I know our local authority has taken extracts of this to use as their training - well worth costs around £18.00. Dot :o

The EYFS doesn't replace the foundation stage profile like hali said, but the foundation stage curricullum guidance.

There will be a revised version of the profile for Septmeber but not a continum from birth- five.

An assessment profile that covers birth to 5 is currently being considered by the government. i am an FSP moderator and going to a meeting tomorrow which has the 'revised' FSPon the agenda- I will try to let you know what I find out

Hi Rachel

I have to say that I think it is a bit unfair of your headteacher to ask you to take on the EYFS on your own when you are still relatively inexperienced without offering you training. I think schools will be scrutinised quite carefully with the way they implement the EYFS because there is a perception that they may not be quite so focused on child initiated play as some of the other non maintained sectors. If I were you I would really push for some training - it may be that your Head is not as aware of the implications of the EYFS as maybe she should be. (It could also be a real opportunity for you to drive the school forward in their Foundation Stage provision). Good luck.
