My school has done this a few times. We were inspected in 1996 and the then HT got the inspector back for the next 2 years to 'do' a day and feed back at the staff meeting. Our chair of govs was an Ofsted inspector and he did it one year.I think it is quite common practice.

I am in a school setting and our school improvement partner (think thats what she's called) at the LEA does something similar to an ofsted inspection. She comes in reguarly to speak to the head and deputy but has never looked at foundation stage too closely.

In Oxford we have Iters and ECERS WHICH our Early Years teacher carries out. When she came to us she came 1st thing in the morning and stayed all day mostly in one particular room (ITERS is infant and toddlers cant remember what ecers stands for but its for 3+) , its a book with a set of things to look for in different areas and you get marks. I'm not explaining i very well, its not Ofsted but it does give you a very good idea on where improvements could be made and where you are ok. If you type ITERS or ECERS into Google you'll be able to get more info.
