Guest Posted September 3, 2008 Share Posted September 3, 2008 I've got a large chalk board in my classroom which the children love, but I am thinking of asking the caretaker to screw it to the wall outside. Has anyone done this? I'm however thinking it will probably go rotten? Has anyone got any ideas for stopping this happen? or do you think I'm best putting it outside until it does rot and then placing it each year with a new piece of wood and painting it with chalkboard paint? I have a wooden door that backs onto our playground that is never used so I have painted that in blackboard paint instead, obviously it's designed to go outside so won't go rotten. AnonyMouse_3735 Posted September 3, 2008 Share Posted September 3, 2008 we made one using blackboard paint, or two in fact, but they are hung up and taken in when we are not using them, Just a hook and string through the board, but having said that we have left it out and so far so good, surprisingly, but don't ask the kind of wood as we used a broken easel and dismantled it using the boards. AnonyMouse_1469 Posted September 3, 2008 Share Posted September 3, 2008 we have some lovely chalkboards which hang over our fence.They are made from yacht plywood and simply painted in blacboard paint, they are out in all weathers and have lasted four years so far with no ill effect, though we do take them in at night. Guest Posted September 3, 2008 Share Posted September 3, 2008 Ours is outside and fixed to wall so is just under the eaves/gutter which i think helps, so far we have not had to repaint but i have my pot handy.. the kids love it we havent had any grafitti etc on it or damage but i do check daily nothing rude has been added by older children i love the idea of the whiteboard too being outside will price up and find a nice parent with big drill i would love to put a magnetic board up too does rain effect these does anyone know? I have some magnetic paint (which I haven;t used yet). I guess you use it the same way as blackboard paint and wold presumably last the same length of time. Guest Posted September 4, 2008 Share Posted September 4, 2008 Hi, we have blackboards outside than fasten onto the fence. We have only done this this year. The children have loved them. I have taken lots of pictures of the children using them and they have loved writing their names and then drawing a picture underneath. We do take them in at night time, can be a pain taking them in and out but its well worth it. If you want something outside why not get someone to make you a large triangle or hinged board that you can move in and out? Maybe you're like us in a church hall with very limited storage. I am thinking of ways of circumventing the ways in which the Parish like to curtail the effects our group has on the landscape! Our playhouse/storage shed had to be painted black anyway (we needed planning permission for it and there were stipulations!) so I could paint the side of the house with the magnetic paint and then paint over the top with blackboard paint - two birds with one stone! No-one would ever know the difference! The problem is that children can't actually access this side of the house. Will need to look at that one! Its a continual juggling job - I have to really think about which new resources to buy because inevitably things have to have multiple uses wherever possible. Its about making the best use of what limited storage space we have so I need to be creative, I think! Rumour has it that we're going to get some funding this term to develop our outdoor area - so hopefully I can pay for some lovely carpenter to make me some resources! AnonyMouse_12524 Posted September 5, 2008 Share Posted September 5, 2008 We also have a blackboard (blackboard paint on chipboard), a magnetic board (same, but with magnetic paint) and a duplo board (painted chipboard with 4 duplo bases stuck together in a big square). These hang on sturdy hooks on the wall outside which we put away every night, but they don't take up alot of space. Also great as they don't require alot of setting up when you have so many other things to do in the morning. The children really love them. The chalk boards are made from a special laminate which requires no maintenance i.e. repainting and the chalk surface last virtally indefinatly. there contact no 0161 764 9500.
