Clay

Hi!

I'm doing work on clay this week, and wondering if I could have suggestions on keywords and things to encourage the children to talk about what they are doing? Any ideas welcome, thank you!

squash, mold, pummel, fletten, squeeze, stretch, cold, soft, hard, smooth, earth, dry, slip (in the slip you use to hold the clay parts together)

I would allow children plenty of opportunities to use lots of different tolls for making texture and adding to their structures- lolly sticks, sticks from the garden, leaves, conkers, shells, combs for mark making wire and beads, sequins, buttons etc.

Have you though about showing children examples of artists work to inspire them and encourage them to talk about what they see ahead of them using the clay? Anthony Gomely terracotta statues, Barbara Hepworth, Giacometti's figures- they could do wire people or pipe cleaner people first then build bits of clay around these forms

Google images should bring up lots of 'clay' based art.

We have a 'Stay and play with Clay day' were parents and their child get together and play with clay! It's a lovely atmosphere where we all get to play and experiment!
