Next term's topic is 'Shoes' (odd I know!!) incorporting stories such as Cinderella, Elves and the shoe maker etc. Just wondered whether anyone had any ideas for a role play area we could have in the classroom linked to the topic shoes? Tinky Obviously - shoe shop, but how about dance class with different types of dancing shoes for different types of dancing? Or a kind of Mr Ben's magic changing room with different kinds of shoes and costumes for different role play - clown, farmer, ballet/tap dancer...? Guest Posted December 6, 2008 Share Posted December 6, 2008 shoe shop is always a success!!! Resources Shoes - display window, Shoe boxes Shoe-rack for display, Foot measuring thing/tape measures. Shoe horn; shoe trees, Shoe laces, Shoe Polish. Shoe cleaning area. Shoe repair area. Slippers/boots/sandals/flip flops. Buckles - different fasteners, Different textures - leather, plastic, patent, suede, fur, trainers, Big Shop sign. Carpet., bags, tights, belts, in-soles, socks, gloves, Cash till, Receipts, Money, purses, handbags, Uniform/badges for assistants names, Open and closed sign, Price tags, Opening times. A visit to the shoe shop will be a regular occurrence for most families. Young children will be familiar with the process (usually enjoyable!) of having their feet measured and choosing shoes. A well equipped and well planned shoe shop role-play area can provide the basis for many planned and child-led play experiences, with opportunities to use both the indoor and outdoor environment. Creating a shoe shop role-play area: As with all role play areas, the shoe shop needs to be inviting and realistic. Initially, involve the children to get their ideas about what it should contain. A group visit to the local shoe shop would be a great way to do this. Involve the parents in starting a collection of variety of footwear and shoe boxes. Introduce labels for shoes and signs telling customers to ‘Pay Here’, ‘Children’s Shoes’ etc. How are the children going to measure their shoe size? You might persuade someone to loan you a real measuring gauge. Otherwise involve the children in making one from a rectangle of wood or card with sizes marked on it. Provide the shop assistant with a till and calculator.
