Policy on Smoking and Substances (alcohol or drugs)

The Preschool recognises that many people in our society smoke and drink alcohol. We are aware that smoking and drinking alcohol is lawful and a matter of choice for adults. We are aware that some substance abuse is unlawful.

We recognise that smoking and drinking to excess are activities disapproved of by many parents and to which they do not wish their children to be exposed. We recognise also that our employees have a right to expect to be able to work and have periods of rest from work in a smoke free environment.

We have therefore designated all the premises within the confines of the Preschool building and grounds as a smoke-free and substance-free area. No one is permitted to smoke, drink alcohol or use illegal substances at any time on Preschool premises. Any staff who wish to smoke are prohibited from doing so within the Preschool grounds, thus reducing the chance of any child seeing a member of staff smoking. If a member of staff smokes (before entering the Preschool grounds) they must wash their hands before they begin to interact with children.

Children will not be released to any adult who appears to be under the influence of alcohol or other substances; Their second contact will be telephoned and asked to come and accompany the adult and child.

All parents are informed of this policy when applying for their child to come to Preschool.

All local schools who provide work experience pupils, and the local careers service are informed of this.

All staff are informed of this at interview, and are required to sign to say that they agree to abide by this policy. Staff not abiding by the policy are given a formal warning and the disciplinary procedure is implemented. Staff are not permitted additional breaks for the purpose of smoking, and smokers and non-smokers have the same breaks.

We ask that Parents accompanying the Preschool on outings do not smoke or drink alcohol in the vicinity of the children.

Photography Policy

When a child is accepted for the Preschool, the parent is asked if they agree to the child being photographed by a member of staff or individual validated by the Preschool. This enables the Preschool to proceed with the taking of photographs for publicity shots, evidence of children participating in the curriculum, pictures for Displays, children’s folders, evidence portfolios and at special occasions such as Christmas.

Every parent has the right to refuse this request, in which case the child must not be photographed by any member of staff, by a parent, or by any outsider without the express permission for that occasion of the parent with whom the Preschool has a contract.

While pictures of children may be used as part of the publicity of the Preschool, no recognisable pictures of children will be displayed on a Preschool web site, nor will they be made available to anyone other than the child’s Parents in a digital form, without their express permission.

Where pictures are made available to the press or television, they will not be released with the names of the child unless the parent gives their permission for this to be done.

Where pictures are taken of the whole Preschool (for example on the day of the visit of Father Christmas) the parents of children who have opted out of having the child photographed will be contacted to allow them to rescind their decision.

Photographs are stored on a password-protected computer and on CDs, which are stored in the filing cabinet.

Just a quick thought - what about outside websites such as this one?
