Guest
Hi I am struggling with our outdoor space. we have a big piece of concrete for large physical play. we have bikes, balls.hoops etc but all I find is that they fall over etc and as its concrete it quite a rough surface and we get grazes galore! Has anyone got any ideas????
Helen
Have you got any wall space that you can paint targets on? You could make up throwing games, eg throwing bean bags at the circle with a number two on it, etc. You could use ribbon sticks and scarves to encourage controlled physical play, without rushing around and falling over (play some calming music to help!) How about setting up an area for large construction. Again, opportunities for physical development, creating structures with boxes, crates, planks etc where hopefully they won't injure themselves! Setting up dens with fabric/washing lines would also encourage different (less frantic ) play outside.

AnonyMouse_10713
We also only have a concrete play area. It can be a nightmare with grazed knees etc, but it seems that some cohorts can be worse than others!! The first year we opened we had 78 grazed knee/elbow injuries over the space of the year. This year we have had 2, and we now have a canopy and are out every day. Not much help sorry!!
AnonyMouse_1490
Part of our area is concrete. On that area we have sand and water troughs and brushes to paint wall, rubber hopscotch mat, 2 small tent one with books, other for instruments, 2 matted areas areas for small play and construction, large tent for role play, hoops and bean bag target, stepping stones and small balance beam placed near wall. All the more physical has been banned to the grasses area. The children do complain because the bikes don't go fast enough but we just tell them to keep trying then they will get strong muscles.
