Guest Posted May 15, 2009 Share Posted May 15, 2009 Hi everyone, Just wondered whether anyone had created a role play area linked to the theme 'dinosaurs'. Our children are showing a keen interest in this and would like to work with them to create a role play area. Any ideas would be fab! But we have a dinosaur dressing up costume which was a Disney thing I think. all you can see is the child's face above is the dinosaur head and he has a big tummy and long tail. You would think it is cumbersome to walk about in, but it is very light, the tummy is padded out the children look wonderful in it, but some find it a little scary. You could make dinosaur hat bands. I photocopied dinosaur pictures from 10 Terrible Dinosaurs (enlarged them on the photocopier). We painted them and then stuck them on to hat bands. The children could then act out 10 Terrible Dinosaurs- great little counting book. You could make cardboard "hands" and "feet" - thick card cut into dinosaur claws with straps on the palm side of the hand to hold onto. We made dinosaur footprints by pressing our large dinosaur model feet into playdough and baking them until they went hard the children loved them and you could hide them in the sand pit may be. We also made tinfoil dinosaurs, sheets of tinfoil which the children scrunched and twisted into the shapes of dinosaurs with long tails and necks, some then pasted coloured tissue to their models, they looked good. Guest Posted May 15, 2009 Share Posted May 15, 2009 We had a dinosaur museum, and a paleontologist office - complete with bones to excavate - children loved it - so much focused concentration, turm taking, sharing, signing up for thier turn on the excavation duties! Guest Posted May 15, 2009 Share Posted May 15, 2009 Hi we are also doing Dinosaurs at the moment in the foundation stage We have made the outdoor role play area into a cave and put binoculars, diniosaur topped pens and pencils dinosaur foot print note pads torches and clip boards in here they can look out of the window at the dinosaurs pinned to the fence and have a go at writing down the dinosaurs they spot. There is also dinosaurs hidden behind coloured see through papaer which they can use their torches to spot. We created as a class a large dinosaur which we will use for measuring out of lots of boxes they loved this especially painting it. We have salt dough letters in the sand to be used as fossils with waist jackets, torch head bands, paint brushes and magnifiying classes so they can be archeologists We also created a huge nest with brown paper and lots of sticks that the children assembled with some guidance!!!! inside this we made some paper machie eggs but put items in them to make sounds so they can match the pairs also different weights. We made a paper machie Volcano one for them just to play with the dinisoaurs and a smaller one which will do the volcano experiment with, before we do this we will use it for a literacy activity pulling out dinosaur bones with words on. We made some huge dinosaur feet out of card and black bags that we will place jelly, rice, pasta and some other bits into we made smaller feet with elastic on so the children can use their hands to stomp in the different textures to see how it feels and sounds.
