I have just done this questionnaire - not sure if it was worth it though because I thought it would give me the chance to give some views on the EYFS and it didn't.

Thanks for sharing the link to it though.

One interesting thing on it was the question about how you assess children - we just use developmental matters, but it asked which of the following you used out of Early Childhood Rating Scale Leuven Scales Schemas Learning Stories LA-produced assessment - I wonder if anyone has any experience of using these and whether we should be using them as well as eyfs development matters? I have already thought that developmental matters are a bit too vague to identify the need for early intervention eg in speech and language.

Thanks for this Rea - I see it will take 30 minutes to do and so I've opened it in another tab and will do it later!

I was puzzled by this question Starburst, especially by the mention of ECERS in terms of assessing children - since this is an environmental rating system and not a method by assessing children's learning and development. I have emailed the QCA to tell them this, and also to say that I felt the questionnaire didn't allow practitioners to comment on how well the EYFS has been implemented, or to comment on the challenges we face in delivering it. :o

Personally I don't really think the development matters statements are designed to enable practitioners to identify which children require additional support or intervention for their speech and language or other needs since they are broad descriptions of what children at a typical age/stage are likely to be doing. Observations linked to the development matters statements might indicate that a child is operating above or below the age phase which we would expect them to be secure in. I think much more detailed observations of children are needed to assess when children might need specialist support, together with our knowledge of child development theory and the more precise information about developmental norms given in books such as Mary Sheridan's. But I could be wrong of course!
