the written word around the home in mags books and paper is all different kinds, shapes and sizes

just think about brand names on bottles

so really it does not matter as long as there is the written word and a picutre

once children notice the written word they will begin to understand that it has meaning

that is just as important as wherether it begins with upper or lower case............just an opinion

I agree a wide range of printed and handwritten text in a variety of places around settings will encourage literacy awareness but the children beginning to recognise their own name would look for capital letters. How many times do a children say 'that's mine' when spotting a capital or number. It's good to also point out 'Look Daniel the Duplo begins with a D too!' or better still if the child spots it! As you say a lot of text in the 'real' world looks different but thats marketing and branding so the context is different.
