Dissertation Ideas! Any Help Out There?!?!

Hi All,

I am about to enter my 3rd and final year of my teaching degree, I have specialised in the Early Years so feel that I should reflect this by choosing a relevant EY topic / focus for my dissertation. However, the word limit for our paper is rather short (7500 words) and so far many of the titles my friends and I have thought of have been rejected as they were too big!

I am now stuck and at a mind-block lol! Can anyone suggest any ideas / tips on what I could base my research on? Any help would be greatly appreciated and would help me stress less before I go back to uni!!

Thank You everyone!

Hi

Don't know if my idea is much help, but would suggest, Humour in the Early Years, someone at our Uni did a short presentation on children's sense of humour and it's development and also that research suggests they are lacking in some areas, she had a brilliant piece from the Times newspaper on it, very interesting.....the whole class was spellbound........she only wished she could have done more on it.

i'm very interested in the replies you get for this thread as i'm in the same position, i don't have a clue what to do mine on... everything i think off i get told that its hard to evaluate....i was thinking of doing the effects of television on early years developemnt but was asked how would i evaluate my results? Good question! I'm just not sure what to do... good luck with yours..

Thank you L that sounds really interesting as I have found whilst on placement that a lot of the EY children have a good sense of humour but a lot of the time it wasn't encouraged as the teachers assumed the children were messing around or acting silly. I will have to look around for some literature / research on it.

Simcity: Good luck to you too. We are a very small campus as well and our library is less than useless at times so I really need to think of a good topic so I can get the books ASAP. I had exactly the same response from my tutors in that my initial ideas were too broad or there was little I could do to evaluate the question. I have a deep interest in child psychology and the behaviour of children (influences, genetics etc) but again too broad and no way I could fit it into a 7500 word essay. I have found a lot of people talking about the outside learning area and how it is important to children's learning and development and also a lot of talk about gender in the EY and the influence of the media on children's self esteem........just a couple of suggestions to get you started. Good luck

Hi Sam

I have finally decided upon mine - after knowing exactly what I didn't want to cover, but not knowing what did grab me....

I have plumped for children's ability to access adventurous/physical play and how this is influenced by adults' attitudes and behaviour.

Everything else I chose either didn't grab me or didn't offer enough rtheoretical evidence.

Good luck to all planning and doing their dissertation this year!

I think this is the key really - whatever you choose has to really interest you. Otherwise if you don't really care about the outcome it might be very difficult to sustain your interest and commitment over even a short study period! And having lots of literature to review helps too!
