:o Happy New Year Everyone. We are doing Animal Habitats as our next topic which is the first time for us after just changing some topics in Nursey and Reception. Does anyone have any ideas or some planning that they would be willing to share. Thank you.

Hi Gwen

Have you thought about having a mini habitat in the classroom e.g. wormery / fish tank for children to look at. Lots of lovely 'outdoors' stuff you could do with looking under rocks and logs!!!

Happy New Year

You could look at the habitats of domestic and wild animals-stables, kennels, hamster cages etc. and then nests, burrows, dens. You could compare them by looking at the fact that domestic animals live in man made homes whereas wild animals make their own, or adapt man made objects.

The only other thing I could think of was the obvious one of above and under ground.

Not so much habitiats, but we did an activity where you choose an animal cut it out

and then hide it. eg a tiger, look at the colours and cut up grasses, use orange shades of various media. Plenty to talk about. We did this with Reception and year 1s.
