There are also some lovely books that lead to number problems such as Alex's Bed, Rosie's Ice Cream i have a list somewhere on good books for maths if you like I can post it here. Lorna our reception teachers use Abacus and seem to like it. Lots of ideas for practical activities and they choose the unit that goes with their topic-eg when doing transport they do unit on shape.
