Please could you share with me what you did or are going to do with them on their first day? Do you introduce class routines/rules bit by bit etc? Or try and do a circle time or phonic activity. Guest
Oh! Scoobydoo don't worry we all feel a little nrevous when they all come in even if we have been doing it for some time. I have my children in a little at a time and I introduce them to the room and the environment. I use a set of bells as a signal and we play a game of listening for the bells and when you hear them you stop and wave your fingers until everyone has stopped. It takes time but they alwsy get there. As for running riot it is highly unlikely if you have a good indoor and outdoor area and if you just play with them I am sure you will find them fine. In my experience don't try to be too prescriptive to start just see what interests them. Good luck I am sure it will be fine!
Guest
I've had 18 Reception children in since Thursday (expecting 12 more in January!) and we've spent the time playing with the children and getting to know them. We've done a few activities - such as starting our self portraits and some number games, but we're just seeing what makes them tick. As for classroom routines you can't do it all in one go, so just have a think about where you want to start and gradually introduce more. Things like getting their attention you might want to start with straight away - we use a hand bell that an adult rings, then the children stop, look, listen and wave their fingers in the air to make sure there's nothing in their hands. We did lunch time and play time routines straight away and they need constant reinforcement, now we're moving on to class rules and the activity board. It takes time and energy, but it'll start to fall into place after a few more days. I don't think there's anything wrong with feeling nervous - it's a sign that as practitioners we don't take it for granted that we can do this and it's as much a new challenge for us as it is for the children. I came to Reception from Year 4 and I was petrified, despite being an Early Years Specialist! I love it though and wouldn't want to be anywhere else right now. Just enjoy yourself and learn together. Good luck!!
Guest
Good luck, you'll be fine. I have just come back to teaching Reception after a few years at home with my own children, I was really nervous too. Have had two days with my new class now and it was fine. I have done some painting with them, but other than that have just been playing with them and gradually introducing the routines.

Guest
Hi Scoobydoo Yeah we all get nervous and know just how u feel as i'm back in YR after year 2. Think that most important things in first few days is to spend time letting the children talk and get to know each other. In a circle I plan to let them show everyone their new shoes, socks and look in the bookbag box and find their bookbags. Hopefully we will then go onto to look at their names on their bags and then choose a book from the book corner to take home. We will then go on from there.... One thing I remember from the past is that everything takes so much longer so lining up and getting ready for things like play can take a good 10/15 mins at first. I do hope that you have fun tomorrow and sleep well Redbase
