We base our toys topic around toy story (well toy story 2 to be precise as it's a U) we watch the film as the stimulus. We do look at how the different characters move and link that to other moving toys. We use scenes from the film to highlight and talk about different shapes. We solve problems related to the alien with 3 eyes. I'm sure there were some other things but still in christmas mode.

Could you make a small toy museum - ask parents or other teachers to bring in toys from their childhood days to look at and discuss. We had a group of children who made catalogues to sell toys from in the toy shop. Any chance in getting some toys from around the world? I love the story The Best Loved Bear, this takes place in school, they have a competition each child brings in a bear, one little boy loves his bear, but is ashamed of him as he has half a chewed ear etc. and is sticky from where he tries to feed it ice cream - anyway, all the bears are judged by headteacher who chooses this boys little bear in the end over all the others who are well kept.

Far too old for your children I know, but i quite enjoyed the recent Toy stories programme by James May on BB2, each week he had a huge project to undertake using toys from his childhood, such as model making kits - they built a life sized model of a spitfire, or a bridge from meccano, flowers from plasticene, which became a garden at the Chelsea Flower show etc.

Perhaps the children could make something for one of their toys, a bed, or a car or something from recyclable materials

Sparklebox has got a good role play pack that you could use... could link your numeracy with that as well for coins, weight etc.

You could make it into a project looking at toys over the term leading up to making a toy with a moving part/ pushing-pulling. Ask the children to bring in their toys from home to look and compare and as a stimulus for making their own toy. Compare olden day toys to toys now?

Our year 1's do a project called 'Santa goes on holiday' and while he is away they have to design a toy for him for next year.

Junk modeling designing their own toy?

What is your literacy topic, could you link in?

Could you have a dolls/bears hospital role play? Lots of opps. for writing prescriptions and hospital notes on clipboards.

Could you gather a collection of balls and compare size, colour, bounceability, weight etc. and make a display of them sorted to different criteria?

Make beds for toys/dolls/bears out of junk/shoeboxes/ And then use them in the hospital?

Read 'Dogger' and set up an old toys stall that the children organize?
