AnonyMouse_18910
Have you used the book, come to tea on planet zum zee? (by Tony Mitton and Guy Parker-Rees) It's a good book to use if your topic is around an alien tea party, there are magical hovering pizzas in the story so we made pizza, there are musical cookies in there too, we made domino biscuits (some good PSNR out of that activity). We made rockets with loo rolls & balloons, we made jellies. We also hosted a tea party for a visiting alien. I dressed up in my husbands painting overalls & put a mini mouse dress over the top & brought some brightly coloured iced cupcakes. The kids loved it. The children & I built a rocket with lots of boxes, bottle top buttons foil & glitter. The came up with lots of ideas for inside like a loo, bath, food & water etc.... this was good as we were looking at health & growth at the time. I hung Christmas lights in the role play & covered the rest of it in black cloth to try to make it look like space. We all then boarded the rocket & did the count down & up's. The children loved having the 'captains log', to fill out.

AnonyMouse_79
Sarah, I think you will need to make these activities up if you do not have any other details. A journey into space could have a PSE theme, collaboration and cooperation etc, could you make a role play or drama activity with the children? Your snacks and drinks, use other recipes and adapt. Musical jumps, any sort of physical activity with star/ planet names maybe. Good luck.
AnonyMouse_79
Sarah, I have merged your posts. Nicky has some lovely ideas. Another good book to help you could be "Whatever Next" by Jill Murphy.
AnonyMouse_1469
we bought some real space food, (I think from the natural history museum?), but it was very expensive for what it was..................................though it WAS fantastic! the space ice-cream was particularly lovely and it looked like a lump of polystyrene we also made a 'milky way' backdrop for our notice board, by simply letting the children flick white paint onto black paper, very effective.....and they made some planets by marbling circles of white paper. It looked wonderful. We also bought a space outfit and some photographs of astronauts and had an inflatable space ship for them to ride on. Planet zum zee is alovely book, as are the others, so you should be able to get some good ideas from them. Talk about the food and how you could transport it into space..........and would it really stay flat on the tablecloth?? what else might happen to it?what sort of food would they like to take into space? could the animals really breathe up there?? if not, what would they need to make it possible?? why would they need special clothes......and which clothes? can we talk to people on space craft?? talk about satellites and how they help us...........................GPS etc How would you go to the toilet in space?? ( with difficulty, and I believe it is frozen, then brought back to earth with them for disposal here............quite right too!)
AnonyMouse_3735
Journey through space - we used Whatever next Jill murphy, read the story and then acted it out... how would they feel, what do they think would happen etc etc. this led into the space picnic, which we had but could just as easlily be one where children make it... We used rolls as base and then children added toppings, we grilled it but if no grill have sent them home for cooking and eating.. I also found flying saucer 'sweets' for the children to try, rice paper to eat as well, as not many will know what this is, you can sometimes find dried fruits in health food shops , I found dried strawberries to try, and there is always popping candy if you can find it.. I also found some in chocolate, each had a small piece... Usw any space music and make up movement to it, include star shapes and jumps but also slow and fast movements.. etc... We had a childs CD of space music but dont think it is available anymore.. I was looking for it online when I found these , Space snacks Inge
