Wow Activity Ideas For Problem Solving

Recommended Posts

I am trying to plan some 'wow' activities (both large / small group) based upon the 'uses developing mathematical ideas & methods to solve practical problems' aspects of NLC & Calculating. Any inspiration - or pointers to get me started would be very gratefully recieved.

I know its not ourselves, but if you are going to think about frogs and tadpoles, I made a set of cards for the children to use that had little drawings of fish bowls (6 ish of them on a A4 sheet), each fish bowl then had a different number of tadpoles already drawn in it and a bubble with the number 10 (you could do 5 for LA children). The card was then laminated (or you could use sticky back plastic - that wipes clean easily) and then the children had to draw the correct number of tadpoles to make the total of 10. I also had a set that had blank bowls so the children could roll a dice and draw the matching number. One girl (who was very able) used to write her own number in the total bubble then she would roll the dice and draw that many, then work out how many more to get the total she chose. I loved her - especially when she did it with the moderator in looking at PSRN and she was chosen to be observed!!!

Could do something similar with ducks on a pond - just use one large pond on a sheet and have cut out ducks - they are a bit harder to draw than tadpoles! Also sunflower seeds in the middle of a sun flower head has similar potential.

Can't think of anything for ourselves - unless you could use a similar idea for fingers on hands and toes on feet?!?!
