AnonyMouse_2157 Posted March 1, 2005 Posted March 1, 2005 Hi I'm deperate for a poem/rhyme about skin colour/ similarities/differences in people. You know the sort that says it doesn't matter who we are or what we look like. Can anyone help NEEDED ASAP (HMI coming in 2 days)!!!! aaaahhhh!
Steve Posted March 1, 2005 Posted March 1, 2005 Hmm - I can only, fairly pathetically, think of Ebony and Ivory (the Stevie Wonder/Paul McCartney song) at the moment. The lyrics aren't difficult but probably not Foundation Stage simple... Sorry Liza - if I think of anything I'll come back to you
Guest Posted March 1, 2005 Posted March 1, 2005 I have vague memories of one we used to sing called 'The ink is black, the chalk is white' possibly by Sidney Carter or someone of that era. I wonder if it would be very pc today.
Guest Posted March 1, 2005 Posted March 1, 2005 We sing a lovely song at school called Rainbow Tribe - I can write out the lyrics, but I can't sing you the tune (unless you're desperate and email me with your phone number ) It's an echo song, so you sing the first bit and the children sing the bit in brackets Chorus: Hey ya ya (Hey ya ya) Oh ya ya (Oh ya ya) Hey ya oh ya ya The ones that fly (the ones that fly) The ones that crawl (the ones that crawl) The ones with legs And with no legs at all We're all a part (we're all a part) Of the whole you see (the whole you see) Sisters and brothers will you sing it with me? So, Chorus From the biggest big (the biggest big) To the smallest samll (the smallest small) We're all living on the same Earth and ball. One sky above (one sky above) One Earth below (one Earth below) The only planet with life that we know. So, Chorus We're all one tribe (all one tribe) With different tongues (with different tongues) So many colours, some old and some young. I dance with you (I dance with you) You dance with me (you dance with me) Weaving our movements in one tapestry. So, Chorus Let's celebrate (let's celebrate) Together now (together now) Caring and sharing is our aim and our vow The holidays (the holidays) Will soon be here (will soon be here) Let's sing one last chorus and give a great cheer. So, Chorus Yeah! It probably seems quite long and difficult at first glance, but the tune is easy and the children love it (YR to Y2). You could always chant it! Good luck. I will see if I have anything else in my files...
AnonyMouse_2127 Posted March 1, 2005 Posted March 1, 2005 ASPK I love the words to the song - haven't heard it before - shame we can't get sound on here isn't it - because I'd love to hear the tune. Sue J
Guest Posted March 1, 2005 Posted March 1, 2005 'All the colours of the earth' ( can't recall author sorry - American publication - think I got my copy from Letterbox library www.letterboxlibrary. co/com? ) Its' a poetic journey through skin colours, hair types and it really lends itself to the kind of work you speak of. Its fine for all KS1 but I've used it with my Reception classes for many years - it describes skin colour as ( best as I can remember) tinkling pinks of sea shells, roaring browns of bears etc and illustrations are all based around these colour schemes. - sorry if this is too late for you - good luck!
Guest Posted March 1, 2005 Posted March 1, 2005 Hi If you look on thw Warwickshire LEA website (www.we-learn.org/artszone/diversity.shtml) you will find a collection of poems written by pupils from primary and secondary pupils on the theme of diversity. You can download the poems. Its an annual event the LEA run with a trophy going to the winning school. My school have used the poems in assembly and as a result I used a poem written by a year 6 pupil to produce some simple artwork with Reception. I used "I am rich yet my friend is poor", there' s also a nice one about different hairstyles you see in assembly (child sitting at the back of a hall!). Hopefully you'll find a suitable poem here. Lisa
Steve Posted March 1, 2005 Posted March 1, 2005 Well remembered Weightman! The ink is black, the page is white Together we'll learn to read and write The child is black, the child is white The whole world looks upon a sight A beautiful sight The world is black, the world is white It turns by day and then by night A child is black, a child is white Together they grow to see Jah light To see Jah light And now at last it's plain to see They'll have again a liberty A liberty (yeah) The ink is black, the page is white Together we'll learn to read and write The child is black, the child is white The whole world looks upon a sight A beautiful sight The world is black, the world is white It turns by day and then by night A child is black, a child is white Together they grow to see Jah light To see Jah light And now the child must understand This is the law of all the land All the land And now the child must understand This is the law of all the land All the land
AnonyMouse_2732 Posted March 2, 2005 Posted March 2, 2005 I'm singing it!! Oh, my goodness - The Spinners!!!! How old am I???(no, don't rush to tell me! Just had the birthday!!!) Sue
AnonyMouse_2776 Posted March 2, 2005 Posted March 2, 2005 If you can download FinaleNotePad 2005 (free and very nice) you will be able to hear the song "People over the world". It is beautiful. The EY and Primary sang it for a Seasonal/Christmas concert and tears came out of everyone... parents and staff. Sorry I do not have the words by themself. Hope you like it. http://www.finalemusic.com/showcase People over the World Composer: ROHIT MENEZES rohit_b_menezes@hotmail.com Category: Children’s Music Instrumentation: Choir Created Using: Finale 2002 Maybe he can send you the lyrics. Good luck !
AnonyMouse_2760 Posted March 2, 2005 Posted March 2, 2005 It doesnt give you much time to learn a new song does it. What about 'Everybody's Building' from come and praise. Its easily accessible and I am sure would be appropriate. (Its the one that goes: All over the World everywhere where theres sunshine, whereever children play etc.. Otherwise, I am wondering if you are best with a poem or multi cultural story to read aloud as a reflection. What we sometimes do is play CD's such as African childrens choir, music from other cultures as the children walk into and leave assembly, making a point of writing up on a board what it is or explicitally telling the children. Hope you manage to get sorted.
AnonyMouse_2776 Posted March 2, 2005 Posted March 2, 2005 Well, this one does not talk about skin colour but is sort of around the topic: It’s a Small World Written by: Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman It's a world of laughter A world of tears It's a world of hopes And a world of fears There's so much that we share That it's time we're aware It's a small world after all There is just one moon And one golden sun And a smile means Friendship to ev'ryone Though the mountains divide And the oceans are wide It's a small world after all It's a small world after all It's a small world after all It's a small world after all It's a small, small world.
