Guest Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 We are planning to start a FSU in September and wondered if anyone can offer some advice re ratios. We will have 12 YR chn and 12 YN chn at the start of the yr, and taking in more YN chn as the year goes on, and we usually gain 1 or 2 Yr chn too as the chn move around school locally. We are planning on have 1 CT and 2 qualified NNs but are confused as to how many chn we can have in a session in total. Some guidance appears to say 1:13 (so up to 39 chn in total with that levle of staffing) and other guidance seems to say you can have no more than 30 if there is only 1 CT. Can anyone shed some light and help me move forward with this please?!?!
Guest Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 As a teacher you can teach 1 - 30 in reception and 1-26 in nursery and ta3's are 1- 13. So if you work on 13's you are fine but as a teacher you can be responsible for more. Hope this makes sense!
AnonyMouse_73 Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 The EYFS does recommend that an additional teacher should be required if the nursery class size is above 30, however in reality Im sure this isn't happening for many of those nursery classes that were always 39 place? I would say good practice would be to stop at 30 altogether with only one teacher.
AnonyMouse_4544 Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 Group size 3.25 Except in the case of reception classes in maintained schools, the size of a group or class should not normally exceed 26. 3.26 Where the size of a group of children aged and three and over in a maintained school (except reception classes) exceeds 26, it is good practice to assign an additional teacher to the class. An additional teacher should always be assigned where the group size exceeds 30. If, in a registered setting, the size of a group of children aged three and over exceeds 26, the ratio requirement of one adult to thirteen children will only apply if two members of staff hold either Qualified Teacher Status or Early Years Professional Status or another suitable level 6 qualification. 3.27 In some settings, more than one group of children may operate together e.g. a school may combine its reception class and nursery class. In such circumstances, it is good practice to segregate children into smaller groups of 26 or fewer for some parts of the day.
