AnonyMouse_7227
Do you mean the children reading with the teacher or doing different activities everyday? I did GR everyday but had a group rotation of 3-4 groups (so 4 days, 4 groups, 3 days, 3 groups) so one day a group would read with me then do a follow up with the TA then, on the next few days do a letter matching activity or a phonic follow up session. AnonyMouse_7610
Once a week, would be pushed to fit more in!
AnonyMouse_25084
It does say on the standards site and in the rose review that you should do 2 a week and a literacy advisor who ran our staff meeting this week said that too but I cannot believe that it would be possible to fit that in! I do 1 a week and do phonic reading games at other times. I really believe in the value of guided reading but think you have to be realistic about timescales. x
AnonyMouse_79
""In addition to daily phonics sessions, the weekly literacy provision for all Reception and Year 1 children should include daily speaking, listening, shared reading and/or shared writing opportunities; twice-weekly guided reading sessions; weekly guided writing sessions and ongoing opportunities for independent reading and writing through adult-directed and child-initiated activities across the curriculum."" And of course daily maths sessions, weekly PSHE (at least), PE twice a week, lunchtime, snacktime etc etc. In other words far too much to fit in. I take these things with a very large pinch of salt seeing as how they seem to be written by people who have never spent a lesson with 30 children, one of whom has soiled their pants and another of whom is having a major nose bleed. Then once you've cleaned them both up both problems immediately reoccur and before you know it half the lesson has vanished and nothing has been done. I'm not exactly sure when we're supposed to fit everything in around this, quite frankly I think my children would spend all their time doing literacy and nothing else if we tried to fit all that in. Maybe it would work if I had a class of 10 children...

I have always had small classes being in a village school but that didn't seem to make any difference at all!
Guest
AND when we're doing 'daily maths sessions, weekly PSHE (at least), PE twice a week, lunchtime, snacktime etc etc. ' plus 2hrs a week RE in a catholic school, plus KU/CD we're not free to observe children in their chid initiated activities for the 80% needed for the profile. Maybe we should just get the children to bring their pyjamas and just let them go home for the weekends. Maybe then we'd be able to fit everything in!
