Guest
After a long time in a very formal year 2 setting, i am moving to fs1! i am delighted as its what i have wanted for ages. something that has been bothering me is all the singing! although i specialised in early years and did plenty of singing then, its seems so long ago that i was singing on a daily basis. Any tips and advice on how to get used to it? Thanks in advance! Edited June 3, 2010 by Guest

AnonyMouse_1195
You will have an audience who will love you whatever you sound like and I'm sure you'll be fine. Practice singing a few nursery rhymes when you're on you own if it helps. If you are looking for CD's of songs you can't go far wrong with Out of the Ark Music which might help you along. http://www.outoftheark.co.uk/age-groups/pre-school/ you may find that your school nursery has some sing-a-long CD's already. What a shame the singing had to stop - I understand that your school is very formal - but surely singing should have a place no matter what year one teaches - the children gain so much from it. Perhaps this is why some of us get self conscious about singing - the informal or singing just for the pleasure of it stopped too soon or just became a bit boring - my boys used to dislike hymn practice each week at their school, but really enjoyed learning other songs once a new teacher joined the school who had a specialism in music, he formed a wonderful choir and found some great songs for the children to sing. Sorry - gone off at a tangent. I'm sure you will just get right back into the swing of singing again - the children at our pre-school don't realise I can't sing for toffees, but we just all have fun doing it. Guest
Just go for it. I created a song book as I always seem to go blank especially as I have to sing with parents who look to me. Just helps me sometimes to make a list of all the songs I know so you can pull them out at any time and know what you going with during the session. I don't read off them but parents like them to take away as they often have never sung when they were little and don't know the words. I also like the Out of the Ark music CD's - they are all very good and the kids love them. Having background signing I find helps. They have a great tidy up time song and the children really do love tidying up to it. Good luck Nikki
Guest
Couldn't agree more!! I have a new TA who laughs at me when I sing (I do sing lots) and the children look at her as if she's the daft one! We have a tidy up song and they love singing that. I also sing 'are we listening' to which the children reply 'yes we are'. It just goes on and on a bit like me really! Anyway I'm sure it will just come - go for it. x

Guest
I know how you feel, I get very nervous when I have to sing with my year one class. I have no sense of tune and if I ever tried to sing something new to them they'd all end up singing it completely out of tune! I tend to use a lot of CDs and things where I can put those on and the children can sing along (I sing along as well though, I can hold the tune better if there's music and I wouldn't ask them to sing if I wasn't going to as well!) As the year has gone on I have got more confident about doing it, but I'll only sing alone (ie. without music) if the children already know the song and are going to join in straight away. I let them carry me through the song! I don't think the children loose out in any way through me doing this, they don't know I'm cunningly covering up my atrocious singing voice

Guest
Thanks everyone, some great advice! I know its a shame that i stopped the singing in year 2, im annoyed at myself, just got bogged down with sat results and raising attainment levels etc. Feel as if shoving work down childrens throats and its the reason i have requested a move to early years, ive lost sight of actually getting stuck into the playdough and getting messy! Hoping that what i learn I can take back to our KS1 at some point as ours is definetly too formal and desk based, a lot to be learned from EYFS. I am going to start slipping in a few songs to my class at the moment to get used to it, i hope they are nice to me! Thanks again!
