How Does Play Support Learning?

Guest

Recommended Posts

My best friend is in the middle of my GTP (Graduate Teacher Programme). She is specializing in teaching KS2 and has been given an essay question about the Foundation Stage. I have offer to help her with this question. But it has been such a long time since I have written an essay that I am alittle rusty. I need to think of all the key point and don't want to miss any. If any of you can think of any key points that must be included then please be kind enough to help.

The question is: 'Discuss how play can support children's development and learning and how this may relate to the six areas of learning in the Foundation stage'.

Thanks for your help!

I did the same essay for my GTP last year - try Planning Children's play & learning in the Foundation Stage by Jane Drake. This book I bought but I went to the library fot the others. I'll try and dig out my essay and look at the bibliography.

Hi Oli

What a lovely friend you are!

Just another quick thought - have a look at the Foundation Stage guidance manual, and the Profile manual. They give useful little snapshots about what children do and how they support each stepping stone or Profile assessment scale.

Hi - another book for the list. I'm in the middle of reading this one (Easter holidays - got time!!).

'Enhancing Learning Through Play - a developmental perspective for Early Years Settings' by Christine Macintyre (2001) David Fulton publishers ISBN 1-85346-761-8.

Its a really easy read and presented in a quick to absorb style - for me anyway. I've been summarising it for our staff meetings and its going down really well.

PS Can anyone give me the proper quote and references for 'play is a child's learning'. Is it Susan Isaacs or did I dream that?
