Guest
Hi all just wondering if i can pick your brains!!!!! My research question is: What materials and strategies inspire children to read in year one? The reason behind this is that they are all so reluctant to use or look at any of the books in the classroom. Anyway I am really struggling to find relevant literature and wondered if anyone had any good recommendations for me it's driving me mad and I am only just begining. Thanks everyone Sal123
Guest
HI, good luck! The motivation has to be child driven and initiated to some extent. It's not just about tapping solely into the latest tv/film/cartoon tie-in. We have found that milking the genre helps, along with involving the children too. Our school has recently purchased Oxford's Project X and this seems so far, early days!, to be tapping into the right sort of things for boys and girls. We will of course be evaluating the scheme to see what appealed, but not yet. Our Y1 teacher has taken it further by making it link with current gaming interests - so there are top trump style cards for childrne to use - they ahve to read the books to gain more points etc. Working well so far! In FSU I create my own books, using tricky words adn photos of children - time consuming, but it certainly motivates and these can be taken home to keep, and if damaged, I print off another! These are not huge books, but they do grab those who are ready to read for meaning. Hope this is of use! Jenni
Guest
Hi Jennim, Thanks for your response, I have had a little more luck finding some great uptodate books in the library on reading for pleasure and have found more journals which has been helpful. I can now hopefully start heading in the right direction towards my literature review. Your ideas and input sound great I shall certainly take some of them on board and look into Oxfords Project X. I plan to do a questionnaire to year 1 teachers soon which I hope will get some response's from fellow FS Forum users Thanks again Sal123 HI, good luck!
