Aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggh!!!!!! Right glad I got that out of the way. xD

 

Back to being proffessional. :( Need advice/ help and just a general sounding off! :(

 

We currently have a little girl in our school nursery who has a number of additional needs. She has a statement and an SSA has been appointed for her. One of the main issues (for parents) is that she has no language at the moment. Her parents have voiced their concerns that because she has no language they can't talk to her about what she has done that day and would like a daily review about what she has done in nursery.

 

The main problem is that her SSA has to dash off at 3.15 (home time). After consulltation with mum we arranged that the SSA would feedback to one of us and we would pass this on as she didn't feel a diary would surfice. We have tried to do this but mum gets distracted and moves away either to get the child or to deal with the other toddler so we usually don't get beyond 'shes had a good day'.

 

Today mum and dad came in and said that they weren't happy with the transfer of information and felt that they weren't being told enough. We have suggested that mum could come a few minutes earlier at which point she could talk to the SSA and then take her home, as the child also gets distressed as she waits for mum. Mum and dad felt that this was not an option as they didn't want her to be treated differently. We have opted for a diary approach but feel that this won't be detailed enough as the SSA has to support her constantly and won't be able to comment beyond ' she's played in the playdough area' and so feel that this isn't what the parents are looking for.

 

Does anyone have any tried and tested ideas, it would be much appreciated. We can really emphasise with the parents. After all they only want what's best for their child. I feel we have some barriers to break down for the parents to trust us as from their accounts they have not had good experiences so far with childcare providers. I'm also unsure if they are clear in their own minds of their expectations of the setting.

Is there anyway your SSA could email the parents, even if it's from home. You can put more into an email than a diary, or could you take short video clips of the things the child does. Just a thought, but they may not be workable.

Could the parents come in early to meet with the SSA away from the classroom? Would the little girl be able to cope for 10 mins without support at the end of the day? Then the SSA could go home and the parents go round and collect the little girl from the classroom door?
