Human Spider Web

Guest

Recommended Posts

Hello.....

The planning for next week is Nursery Rhymes.....with a focus on Incy Wincy Spider.......On wednesday I am getting observed.....and as seen as though my PM target is to develop outside I thought I could focus on spider webs and make a human spider web with the children and a ball of wool................what do you think? Has anyone ever done this?? What early learning goals would this meet???

(PSRN, KUW,PD)

Thank you for your help and opinions

Yep done that! PSE activity - called a friendship web.

Children sat in a circle, adult gives the end of string to child and ask who they choose to hold the string next. Adult holds the ball and unwinds a bit each time, asking the children to hold the string tight when its's their go. Once all have had a go, some more than once, you lay it on the floor and look at the friendship web you have made.

You could also sing the following song. As you handed each child the wool web you say the child's name and when finished put the web on the floor and see what shapes the children can see. Keep going until every child has a piece of the wool, and ask them to 'hold it tight' to keep it fairly taught.

A spider came to visit Simon and he wriggled, he wriggled,

A spider came to visit Daisy and he wriggled, he wriggled,

A spider came to visit Josie, he had long black legs and was hairy too

And he wriggled, wriggled, wriggled, wriggled, wriggled.

The tune is 'the animals went in two by two, hurrah, hurrah'

i've done this but in a different way ...children sit in a circle and adult throws to a named child ...adult holds on to one end and throws the ball the child then chooses the next person holds onto their piece of the 'web' and throws the ball to the other child. it is quite difficult to do because the children need to co-ordinate holding on with one hand, throwing with the other , shouting who they want it to go to and trying to choose someone not next to them ( or you just end up with a cicle :o ) you can then throw on a spider(made out of a balloon or similar)

in terms of ELG's

show control and co-ordination

show an interest in classroom activities

play alongside others

listen and respond

( you could also adapt to add letters/numbers i'm sure)

i have done this with 4/5/6/7/and 8 year olds with various success!

Iv'e done this too

have the children sitting in a circle and roll the ball across to a child who wraps it round their waist and then rolls across to another child, once all the children are in the web choose one child to walk through the web without getting stuck.

then the children have to unwind the web and roll it all back into a ball!!

done this with many age groups. Always good fun. had forgotten about it recently though.

We used to pass it as part of circle time - eg things you are afraid of, someone you like. A visual representation for how we are all different but linked etc!

so many pse links, LCT, and ssm for discussing shapes they can see.

good luck!
