Children's Birthdays

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just a quickie!!! Could I ask how (or if) you celebrate childrens birthdays?

We currently have a plastic cake which we put the asppropriate amount of candles on and sing happy birthday to the child in question and they blow out their candles, they wear a happy birthday hat with candles on the top, we give them a card which is signed from the staff and their friends at pre-school and a fancy sticker. We have asked that parents do not bring in sweets on their childrens birthdays but that they could bring fruit for the children to share at snack time.

We also have a never ending list of parents wanting lists made out of their friends names that they can invite to their childrens partys, give out party invites and then thank you notes. At the moment this seems never ending.

How do you all do yours please?

Thank you

Debbie

Along similar lines to your own - but we only have 22 children on the roll, so not really a problem. Could you have photocopied lists of children names to give out approriately? what about the child whose birthday it is giving out the post? We put children's "post" out with their self-registration names in the morning, but then parents do come in with the children right up to that point.

Hi, at school we were never allowed to give out lists of children's names due to data protection. What I did offer to do though was if child could say the name I could give the correct spelling. Surprisingly most parents rarely asked after that :o

Am interested in the celebration of children's birthdays though, what do you do if a child's birthday is in the holiday? I like the idea of the children making the cake. Cooking for a reason xD

We just do it the nearest day to the birthday - any for those born during the summer holidays, we had a week's worth of cakes and still celebrated, explaining to the children why we were doing it early - and in fact it proved EVEN more exciting because those children felt they were getting an extra birthday!

It was a good opportunity to talk about changes in the year, passing of time, etc.

We also have a birthday hat which the children wear while we sing happy birthday as well as real candles (risk assessed of course!) and a sticker!

And guarenteed, whenever we have a child's birthday one of the other children will make a birthday cake in the sand, the lego, the sticklebricks - you name it, they re-create it!

I love it....

Oh, and we also have a display of 'trees' which the children paint according to the season of their birthday. So bare branches and snow for winter birthdays, orange leaves on the tree and on the ground for autumn - with an apporpriate discussion....

These are on the wall in date order and as each child celebrates their birthday we add a photograph of them wearing the birthday hat....

The children love it too!

Hi we have a carved wooden cake which we light with candles. Each child receives a card from pre-school friends and staff, and a special treat out of the birthday tin. Normally a small fun size Haribo packet of sweets.

Parents do ask if they can bring in something, and we suggest a healthy option for snack-time. But if parents choose sweets, we ask them to come a little earlier so they can give them out with their child. Tend to have lots of birthdays during the hols as we have over 50 children, so we pop them in the post so nobody misses out.

Loving the idea of making the cake as we love to cook but not sure how we could do this so often, we already spend sometime making the playdough each week with the children will have to think about that one thanks :o .

Our birthday celebrations are similar to Debbie's except that our cake is made out of playdough baked in the oven. Child can wear the birthday hat if they wish and blows out the appropriate number of candles.

Parents usually send sweets to be given out by the birthday child as the other children leave. We too give out lists of children's names for invitations and generally put them in children's big plastic bags with their paintings etc. Christmas cards are placed on a table in the corridor......far too many for us to give out.

Could you make it on one day in the week for all those children who've got birthdays falling during that week?

We have a totally false birthday cake (a chocolate box 'iced with pollyfilla') which has holes for real candles.

We count the number of candles needed and say the poem

'matches matches never touch'

'they can hurt you very much'

We then light the candles, sing happy birthday and the child can blow out the candles.

They then receive a card from the cake from 'all of their friends at Preschool' and a present £2 ish

Children often bring in cakes to celebrate which we have at snack time, good way of celebrating family traditions I think.

September and October have been good cake months for us for the past couple of years :o
