How Much Formal Learning ?

How much formal learning should F2 children be doing per day? Is there legally a set amount of time or is it just common sense ?

You may like to follow this thread and see the advice of catma- I have used this chart many many times since she posted it. I am assuming you meen direct teaching with children by formal as I think when we are playing wiuth children we are also enabling them to learn!

Does anyone know if there is a figure which applies to preschool? We do very little adult directed stuff, although there are certainly some activities set up by adults which 'direct' those children who choose to access them.

I think that those figures apply to preschool as well. You will certainly up your attainment if you do that.

surely the time spent on adult directed activities in pre-school depends on the age/stage of the children doesn't it?

Its not about numbers, its rooted in effective pedagogy.

The EYFS directs us to provide a balance of adult directed opportunities with time for child initiated activity. If you look in "learning playing and interacting" there is a useful diagram to demonstrate

(I've cut and pasted from the adobe file - attached) This pedagogy is also supported strongly by the EPPE research. It's the quality of the adult interactions and engagement too that makes a difference.
