We do very little adult directed stuff, although there are certainly some activities set up by adults which 'direct' those children who choose to access them. The EYFS directs us to provide a balance of adult directed opportunities with time for child initiated activity. If you look in "learning playing and interacting" there is a useful diagram to demonstrate (I've cut and pasted from the adobe file - attached) This pedagogy is also supported strongly by the EPPE research. It's the quality of the adult interactions and engagement too that makes a difference.
