A Shepherd's Hat For Christmas?

My 7 year old has just three things on her list for Santa.

A shepherd's crook

A shepherd's hat

A Border Collie.

The dog arrived from the Dogs Trust last weekend in the form of a gorgeous little Jack Russell called Alfie and she is totally in love with him so that's great.

The crook can be bought on eBay no problem.

The problem is the hat. Apparently she has read a book in which a little boy dreams of being a shepherd like his father. Santa brings him the dog, crook and hat for Christmas. I don't know this book and if I ask her to describe the hat she says I don't need to know. Apparently Santa can just bring exactly the same for her as he brought the boy in the book.

I know it's a long shot but I'm really hoping that someone will recognise this book and be able to describe the hat for me.

Hi,

I have this book at home so I've just has a look - the hat the boy gets is a flat cap, the sort my Grandad used to wear (not that that is a very helpful description for you!) From the picture it looks like a herringbone one. He gets a dog whistle as well as the crook and the dog.

You really are a lovely bunch!

A flat cap is the information I needed. I will get busy online now and find somewhere to get one. I'm really glad I solved this one. I was worried that her faith in Father Christmas might be shaken this year. Let's hope she doesn't come up with any more bright ideas.

Thank goodness her sister only wants an iPod. A few clicks on Amazon and that was easily sorted - phew!!!!!

oh, has this stirred some memories! My grandad used to wear flat caps, even as a young man. When he died, I couldn't bear to throw his uge collection away, so some went to charity shops and the rest went to my old preschool setting for the children to play with. One of the boys fell in love with them, one in particular, so, when he left us to go to school, I gave it to him to keep. He wore it for a couple of years, taking it to school every day! So lovely, his mum told me he couldn't bear to go anywhere without it :o

Upsy Daisy - you may need to get a dedicated children's one - so need a specialist outdoor wear shop - when my son was small that was the only place we could get one to fit him. As far as I remember you measure your person from the top of one ear to the top of the other ear, ( so exactly where you want the hat to rest on the ear like a pair of glasses), going over the top of the head - they come in the oddest of sizes such as 6 and 1/8th inch etc.
