Exploring

Recommended Posts

I asked my class this afternoon what they'd like to find out about after the holiday and some of the suggestions included:

places, aeroplanes and Dora the Explorer. I'm thinking this gives me a pretty good starting point for an exploring theme and I want to include Indiana Jones too to help appeal to my boys and to my Y1s (I have a mixed YR/Y1 class). I've already searched the forums and found some ideas but would love it if anyone can suggest any others?

i love going on a magic carpet....try and find a cheap carpet (i like the patterned ones) then go on an adventure...the children can decide where to go and then what are you going to see when you get there...lots of drama then plenty to follow up on later!....of course you have to be really careful not to fall of especially round the corners...we tend to go really fast on ours and usually all fall off at some point! :o

'Edward goes exploring' by ladybird is about a little boy who packs a backpack with binoculars, notepad and pen, magnifying glass and goes looking for new creatures. He finds familiar animals and gives them a new name. He writes the names in his notebook. It usually goes down well and encourages mark making, role play and exploring especially with the boys.

Thanks for the recommendation - makes me think of a character I tell stories about who packs a backpack with things so he can go off on adventures. Maybe I could use him as a starting point...

Does anyone have any ideas about a famous explorer I could look at? I'm thinking of getting a history element in for my Y1s.
