Guest
Hi, i wonder if anyone can help me?! I am an NQT in a very large nursery setting. Next term we are doing Space, and i am really struggling for ideas. The children in our setting never seem to be overly enthusiastic about any of the topics we do, and it's starting to get me down . The staff that i work with are all very experienced, and when i suggest anything they have either done it before and say it won't work, or don't seem to want to take my ideas on board. It would be a great help if anyone could give me a few ideas to get me started! Many thanks x

Many thanks x We transformed our home corner into a rocket using rather a lot of tin foil and milk tops for buttons but this was initiated by the children which all of our 'topics' are. We don't really have themes or topics other than what the children are interested in or around the natural/local environment - weather/seasons/festivals etc
Guest
We also do not work to a topic but when a couple of children were interested in space the idea took off in a HUGE way..... We pushed a couple of tables together and used corrugated card to go around them to make a rocket that was massive. We used an ikea stool so the children went up the steps and actually into the space rocket.... the base of which was the tables.... The corrugated card was covered in foil by the children. It had circles cut out for "windows" We spray painted wellies and builders hats silver (couldnt afford space gear!!) Inside was a little step stool for seating and from a box we made a control panel!! With numbers and info about planets inside it was a great learning experience. I dont believe the children would remain unenthusiastic about something they helped to make that was about 10 feet tall!!!!! Maybe the crux of the matter to look at later is that the children if led by topics might not be doing anything THEY are interested in!
