AnonyMouse_11396 Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Can i please ask how often you practise a fire drill in your setting. We currently do it each half-term and am interested to know what others do.
AnonyMouse_19762 Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Yep - same as that! I do always try and make it a 'different' day each time - so if it was Monday, then next time Tuesday - if you get my drift this is just to ensure that all children will have practised.....
AnonyMouse_3735 Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 we did once every half term but tried to ensure as many children as possible did practice it each time, so could be 3 or 4 days over that period, with a mix of afternoon and morning, with children coming and going was the only way we could ensure most knew the drill . we had a register of children who had completed it each time.. and did occasionally call it at collection or drop off time.. when parents were there.. was interesting to see who had read out fire drill on parents board and who had not.
AnonyMouse_11396 Posted March 28, 2011 Author Posted March 28, 2011 Thanks,we do it every session for a week each half-term so as to ensure all children have taken part, and so that all staff have the opportunity to run a drill too.

AnonyMouse_11396 Posted March 28, 2011 Author Posted March 28, 2011 Thanks, wasn't sure if i was being over zealous, but yet again can never be too careful with something like that i suppose.
Guest Spiral Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 We do the same as Bridger too - it is pretty good as you know that every child and adult have attended at least one drill and they will know what to do in the reality, Spiral
AnonyMouse_13981 Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Yes we do every session for a whole week But we had Mrs O visit last week She was pleased about how we did it every day..... but we should really do it from different exits each time you cannot win Chicken
AnonyMouse_2127 Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 We are the same - once every half term some morning and some afternoons, different times of the day, different days of the week, different exits and different staff raising the alarm. Then it's logged and evaluated. Sue J
AnonyMouse_30937 Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 We had a really good fire drill the other day when a child 'accidentally' set of the alarm, and I (manager) was absent from the setting. After quickly looking at each other to see which member of staff had been charged with starting the drill, I am glad to say, they all reacted quickly anyway, did the right things and got out in record time. Probably the best practice they could have had. Not to say that we should encourage children to go around setting of alarms though!
AnonyMouse_11396 Posted March 29, 2011 Author Posted March 29, 2011 Oops see all that practising pays off. Just don't do it to often hey.
AnonyMouse_20748 Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Yes we do every session for a whole week But we had Mrs O visit last week She was pleased about how we did it every day..... but we should really do it from different exits each time you cannot win Chicken We do it each term differnt days to ensure all children at present at some time. Re : do it from different exits each time, we discovered that if children were in the garden area at the side of our building they couldn't hear alarm, so have put in place a what to do. Its interesting as if there was a fire its likely to be in the kitchen and that right by the outside area. We are in a hall and pack away daily but Mrs O was happy we had risk assessed that factor.
