AnonyMouse_3139
Typical that this should happen at bank holiday when the shop I need is shut! Our electric had to be switched off yesterday for about 15 minds. I didnt think to shut down the PC properly but when the power was back on the PC started up but the monitor and keyboard wont start! The screen shows the monitor logo and then I get a small screen saying 'power saving mode' but then blank with the on/off switch flashing like its on standby. Can anyone shed any light on why this might have happened? I've vacumed it and had it on all night waiting for something to happen and also switched it off for ages. Still nothing. AnonyMouse_35605
Hubby (computer officer) suggests you pull the power lead to the computer out for a couple of minutes and then plugging it back in. Also the leads to the monitor and keyboard if the other doesn't work. Mind you he looked confused which doesn't sound good!
AnonyMouse_3139
Thanks Melba, but I did all that when I vacumed it. If your hubby is looking confused I have no hope really untill I get to the computer man. Looks like more money!
Guest
Hmmm - did this happen after you vacuumed it? I really don't want to panic you, but was once advised when I was very enthusiastic about getting rid of the dust making the schools' sever look untidy, not to use a vacuum and wait til my techie chap came on his next visit. If you did, did you vacuum inside or out and did you use a battery or mains one? I only ask because if you have vacuumed inside, it will have built up a large amount of static electricity inside and may have caused some damage. In all best cases if it won't turn off, press the power on button down for 7 seconds so it powers down, take all the cables out of it, leave it over night, then in the morning plug everything back in (but try changing the usb ports your plug the keyboard and mouse into and turn on - if it asks to start in safe mode, let it then turn off, have a cup of tea, then turn back on! If you still have problems, do you have a spare keyboard or mouse you could try - it could be the keyboard & mouse. If no luck then wait til you see your computer man. Good luck! If you need to buy a new laptop would thoroughly recommend a Dell or a MacBook. (BTW the time it takes to make a cup of tea and drink it is not an official techie recommendation of time to wait but after years of problems, I always finds its about long enough for me to calm down when something goes wrong with a computer and a fine excuse for a cuppa!) AnonyMouse_13453
My techy son says there possibly was a power surge when the power came back on and it's kaput. It will have fried something inside - he's had it before. So you'll need a new monitor I'm afraid
AnonyMouse_30128
i am a complete idiot when it comes to IT but when my monitor does this at work it is just the cables...i seem to have a loose connection ( the computer not me!) so i guess before you panic just check the connections between monitor and cpu and cpu and monitor....i will cross my fingers that always seems to help
AnonyMouse_1195
Don't shoot me but.. just check that you have pressed the power button on the computer and actually switched it on, not just the button which switches on the monitor. If you have done that and it is the same, then reconnect the cables from the monitor to the computer. If that doesn't work it is possible that a power surge has damaged the transformer.
