Same Topics In Nursery And Reception

Recommended Posts

Hi all, we are mid inspection and it's been noticed Nursery and Reception and Y1 are looking at minibeasts, does anyone have an articulated response to this, we plan together to ensure we aren't doing the same books, maths schemes etc are differentiated but I'm too tired to think.

Hi, are you a foundation stage unit with shared areas and resources? Do you both study the same themes every half term and through the year or do you have a 2 year cycle so children dont' meet same themes when they move from N to Rec?

For certain themes there may be a time issue - no minibeasts in Jan/Feb! There may also be money issues if you are getting bug people in etc.

If you are confident in the types and amount of differentiation built in then ask why they are querying your approach, which I presume has been given the go ahead by your school?

Some N children may well be operating at a similar level to some Rec ch and this approach can stretch them - as long as you can show that you are challenging your more able Reception children.

Be interested to hear your follow up!

Tell them you're planning to meet the individual needs of all your children and, as such, there may be some overlap in skills for certain children. Have a large bar of chocolate and a cup of tea and then think about why you decided to follow the same topics...the answer will be right there underneath the inspection panic jumble!

There should be a strong link between your assessment of the skills you want to teach and then how you do this through the context of mini beasts will be differentiated. The topic is merely how you get children engaged in the learning, not the learning per se.

e.g investigative skills - what do you do in Nursery that is built on in Yr R and then more so in Yr1.
