Party Games

Hi what are you all doing as party games for 3-4 year olds. Pass the parcel, musical statues, 4 corners etc

One of favourites for Christmas party is musical chairs - laid out in the usual way, we have lots of space, so no problem for us. As the music stops two chairs are removed, but rather than sitting out if there is no chair that child finds another child's lap to sit on and so we go on until the end - usually the children are all "sitting" on an adults lap.

the other way we do it, is the chairs in a ring with their registration names on and we start the music and swap the names about so they are never in the same place twice, but nobody is every "out", we find different ways of moving about the ring of chairs to match the music we are playing i.e., marching, tip toes, butterflies etc.

Pass the parcel for 20 odd is boring once you've opened the parcel i think and goes on for ever. We would split that into two groups maybe of 10, or one year instead we had the children dancing with numbers written on paper on the floor, when the music stopped they had to jump on a number and I pulled out a number from the "hat" and the child standing on that number when the music stopped came and got their prize from the box.

hunt the bauble...we make small christmas tree necklaces and they have to find 6 different coloured baubles to put on them (baubles= those small circular stickers that you get in most Post offices/shops) the baubles are hidden around the rooom. (or in the garden!) beetle (but with robins) so dice game in small groups. Jigsaw game with old christmas cards chopped in to 3 easy shapes we give them one they have to find the other 2 and put them together. A version of the bean game but with actions appropiate to christmas things ...so reindeer, hands on head for antlers...father christmas, make yourself round...star, star jump etc etc. whats the time father christmas (sleigh time..ie time to catch the reindeers to harness onto the sleigh)

Reindeer Pokey and Wake up Santa will be on our list.

I draw up a large sheet divided into 4

Dancing games-musical cushions, Santas coming...

Ring games-Santa's in his sleigh, There was a princess, Ring-a-ring a Party,Reindeer pokey...

Sitting games-Wake up Santa, Pass the parcel...

Songs-5 mince pies, Rudolfs nose, He'll be coming round the mountain

We choose one from each section in turn. We don't always manage all but I'd rather have too many games than struggle. On a seperate large sheet I also have timings so that all helpers know whats going on and a list of whats to eat and what to put on the table ie. no buns or sweet stuff in view to start with.

A bit military but based on 30 years and approx 60 parties but works for me

for us it was hokey cokey using things like antlers, right hoof, left hoof, red nose etc...

and the other was a version of sleeping lions, all lay down and don't move if you do you have to get up last one still wins..

we also used the parachute at any parties, always a hit..

and for food we always used food boxes so we could put in appropriate for each child less worrying about allergies etc.. just had to watch they did not swap food! They could then take any left overs home in the box, so less waste too..

Most of the games are just adaptations of traditional games.

Reindeer Pokey is indeed Hokey Pokey

You put your antlers in

Your antlers out

You do the reindeer pokey and you turn around

Oh Merry, merry Christmas

Oh Merry, merry Christmas

Oh Merry, merry Christmas

Arms stretched, knees bent rar rar rar

Antlers hooves, fluffy tail, red nose etc For the Reindeer pokey bit we put ourhand at the sides pf our heads and wiggle our fingers.

Sleeping Santa is the bear and the honey pot game. A child sits in the middle with a santa hat covering their eyes pretending to be asleep. Hand bells are in front of them and a pointed at child tiptose in and takes them and hides them behind their back. When the child is safely seated all shout 'Wake up Santa!' Santa has 3 chances to guess who stole the bells. Helps to have a chat about notshouting out the answer first!

Santa's coming has all the children dancing around to music. The music stops and the adult shouts 'Santa's coming' and all the children have to curl up on the floor pretending to be asleep. The adult covers a child with a throw and shouts 'Santa's gone' The remaining children have to work out who is still asleep.

Ring-a-ring a party is ring-a-ring a rosies but creating a christmas party menu. Sing as normal but substitute sausages rolls, crisps, chocolate buns etc whatever is on the menu or ask for childrens suggestions between verses

Theres also pin the tail on the reindeer, hunt the christmas bell,

The day before we will have a 'practise' at some games to lay down anti spoiling rules :o and the children know what to expect from a party as for some it will be the first experience at a game type party rather than a soft play birthday party
