Guest
Hi all I will be working in my own area from January with my group of 11 children that were all 3 between sept and dec I am just working out a daily routine we are open 9 until 12 and I wondered if anyone would mind sharing their morning routine with me. I am not sure if I will be able to manage an independent snack bar as we are in the lower part of the hall which has been screened off and this is not next to the toilets or kitchen also the outside area has not yet been developed for free flow I am still not sure whether it will just be me with the children or I will have another member of staff?? Thanks in advance for any ideas
AnonyMouse_11396
Hi it all sounds very exciting, but before i can suggest routines etc, if the toilets and kitchen are at the other end of the hall you are in and your bit is going to be screened off, how can the children access the toilets and who is it going to be supervised by. AnonyMouse_3735
I am assuming that you on your own is the correct ratio and correct for your situation.. Lots of things spring to mind but my first was same as bridger... how are the children to going access the toilet? - If you are on your own who will supervise them? you will not be able to.. so the question arises even if you don't have snack bar.. and becomes just as complicated if you do supervising 11 children at that age waiting around for everyone else and helping those who need it.. Routine will often depend on the layout, circumstances, children and will vary greatly.. we had self registration and short group time, followed by free play until we all tidied to go outside togehter, snack bar and a focus activity during the free play time.. and all came togehter again at end for story and songs.. in summer it swapped so we went out first when it was cooler.. and different child groups changed it too.. Guest
Hi Thanks for replies the children can go through to the younger children's area and the staff there will be able to take them to the toilet. I am hoping I wont be on my own but if I am the ratio will be 1 to 8 which is in ratio we will all be in a large hall which is sectioned off with screens and cupboards. We are in a church hall and have to set up each morning. I would like to be in the top end of the hall and the children allowed to toilet independently but as it is through a stair-gate and down a short corridor I don't know if that is practical or safe even if the front door is locked we would not see the children?? AnonyMouse_11396
Okay so i guess there must be enough staff in the other room to allow them to supervise this other group of children, who could be in and out all morning. At our setting with 30 children aged 2.5 years to 5years per session, our children self-register using a named card which they place on a board, these are then used again for snack time, this enables us to ensure all children have had a snack. Children then freely choose where to play within the large hall. Once all children are in and the children have been ticked off our register and counted, we then also open up the outside area. All children have the opportunity to play where they wish. We also have at least one adult-led activity running throughout the session, inside or outside. This could be anything from a game, a creative activity, gardening, storytelling and sharing books. The snack-time continues throughout the morning too, with children going with their keyperson. We have reflected and evaluated this many times and feel this best suits our setting and the children. These groups are also mixed ages so the younger children are learning from example from the older children, whilst the older ones are learning to take care of the littlies. The children then take turns to ring the bells for tidy up time, after this is completed we make our way to our book area. The children all have their own seat, we have stories, news time, songs, dancing, musical instruments etc. We then call our registers, one for lunch club, which has been set up whilst children have been having storytime and the other for going home, those children get their coats and are escorted through to our other room where they are collected by their parents/carers. Hope this may help you to think about what best suits your provision.

Guest
sorry i do not see the point of seperating the gruop they learn so much from each other we mix 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 and the learning that takes place between the ages is vast. if you have 11 children you will need someone else with you or you are not meeting the ratio of a 1:8 because the screen stops other members of staff being included
Guest
Hi we have the similar system as Bridger All children are of mixed ages as I feel they learn from each other - however after song time I re-group the children to include a focus time with the key workers groups of 4-5 with children of similar ages. Children self register and register is taken as parents enter the setting and a headcount is made before children go outside - we have a freeflow system until 11am as we share our building. children can access the snack area for one hour during this session, allowing children who only want to be out to access this. We tidy up together for song time then spilt children for groups - I have 8 practitioners each day all in one large hall.
