Lesson Obs-Maths Focus For Spring/easter Topic

Hi,

 

I am being observed soon by my HT and she wants to see a maths input from me. Our topic at the time will be spring and new life. Does anyone have any good ideas of a fun maths activity for the whole class input? Can be a story, song , anything!!

A really good one for this time of year we play (depends on level of your children).

You could have numbers on chicks bodies (chicks to link with theme) upto 20 randomly. you give your children a number problem to solve in pairs- in time given thay have to solve as many problems as possible - each time the problem is solved they cover the chick (with number) with an egg. The aim of the game is for the class to solve a range of problems to cover all of the numbers up (little like bingo)

 

You could ask a range of questions from 1 more than 1 less than...

addition and subtraction problems (simple ones they could use thier finger to work out)

Doubling numbers

you could hold up a jar and get them to estimate how many eggs are in the jar. etc

At least you will definatly cover differientation and get your lower children paired up with higher to solve problems

how about getting a load of those plastic eggs and filling them with different materials(light feathers heavy clay etc) seal and get the children to order in to a weight line from heavy to light....you could then use a pair of digital scales to check the numbers and see which is bigger...could write results or if using couloured eggs it could be a pictorial representation

If you decide to do weight, remember the common misunderstandings that children often have---they often think somethig is not heavy if they can pick it up!

 

Lots of opportunities for combining weight and probelm solving though, especially if you use the plastic filled eggs as finlaysmaid suggests--they are often in the pound shops. Perhaps children could even fill their own to be heavier or lighter than a given one?

 

You could also make humpty dumpty with a variety of variables and see how many different ones children can create?
