Guest
Hi everyone, Does anyone know or use a list of words and pictures that you can use to check children's vocabulary? I was hoping to use this as an assessment in nursery. Any thoughts would be helpful, Thanks!

Guest
We are currently piloting this project in our school: http://www.gl-assessment.co.uk/wellcomm/#about It involves baselining all EYFS children then working with them to boost their langauge skills into the next age bracket. It is working well for us but it is quite time consuming xx
AnonyMouse_2157
We use Wellcomm too, it is time consuming but helps to boost the language and understanding of those that need it. There are 10 questions in each age bracket 5 for expression and 5 for understanding. each question is scored and a colour code given; if a child is amber or red then they will need further targeted intervention. What I like about it is that it comes complete with the activities for both the setting and home that you can do to support the areas that the child has difficulty with. We do small group work with these children over a period of 6-8 weeks and then reassess them. All children coming into our nursery are screened in this way. The work is carried on into Reception and any new children to Reception are screened too. Hope this helps
Guest
I haven't come across this program before - it looks interesting though. I already am monitoring children that I have concerns about using the Language and Communication Tool http://www.foundationyears.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/ECAT_child_monitoring_tool1.pdf and i have a dvd that helps to plan activities that help to boost certain areas. I wonder if the Wellcomm program has crossovers with this? My Head has hinted at using a vocab ticklist to assess the children as well when they come in. Does the wellcomm do this? I used to work in a nursery that used to have a list of words and corresponding pictures that you showed the children and ticked them off if they could say them. With the Wellcomm program do practitioners have to have training and when do you get time to do the screening and group work? Is it built into your daily plans? I work in a 26 place nursery with one other TA. Thanks! xx
