Guest Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 Hi I work in a mainstream school in the FS and we have a downs boy coming in September who is in nappies - does anyone know if there is a policy for the disposal of nappies? As he will be the only one in nappies do we need to arrange for incineration or can they be bagged and binned? Thanks Jo
AnonyMouse_4495 Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 It may depend on your authority as to what their policy is on waste. However, nappies are NOT classed as clinical waste and therefore DO NOT need to be incinerated. Some authorities have special wheelie bins that they charge to collect, but as you only have the one child, this would not seem appropriate. The easiest thing to do is put them in a nappy sack and then into a plastic bag (from any reputable supermarket!) and put them in the bin outside. You could also try contacting phs, who do hygiene products (check out www.phs.co.uk, click on washrooms, baby changing and nappy disposal for the bin that they do - I think they will collect it on a regular basis under a contract agreement) Hope this helps!
Guest Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 although we are a preschool, all our childrens nappies are put into nappy sacks and given to the parent to dispose. they are put into the childs bag, so it is still descreat. im sure schools would be able to do the same thing.
AnonyMouse_79 Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 hi Jo and welcome! Good luck with resolving this one, remember to make sure you have gloves etc for changing and that you are covered staff ratio wise. Do you have any local special schools that you could ask??
AnonyMouse_1469 Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 At our group, all nappies are bagged and returned to parents for disposal. Our council told us such waste would be classeda sclinical and we would have to pay a fortune for it to be taken away.No parents have complained about it, they have accepted it as our practice!
