Recommended Posts

Hi there,

Has anyone got a good song to perform for a harvest festival?

We've already done 1 potato 2 potato and dingle dangle scarecrow- these went down well. We want something that the children will enjoy doing.

THE FARMER PLANTS HIS SEED

The farmer plants his seed,

The farmer plants his seed,

Hi-ho, the dairy-o, the farmer plants his seed.

The rain begins to fall,

The rain begins to fall,

Hi-ho, the dairy-o, the rain begins to fall.

The sun begins to shine,

The sun begins to shine,

Hi-ho, the dairy-o, the sun begins to shine.

The wind begins to blow,

The wind begins to blow,

Hi-ho, the dairy-o, the wind begins to blow.

The food begins to grow,

The food begins to grow,

Hi-ho, the dairy-o, the food begins to grow.

The children dress up or use big aminated clip-arts as visual cues, together with action rhymes. It is very easy and they love it!

I'm a little seed

Small and round

Bury me deep in the ground

Sprinkle on some water, some sunshine too,

Watch me grow as tall as you.

The children love to do this action song and take turns to be the sprinkler :D

Tune of I'm a little teapot.

I don't know the tune, but how about Oats and beans and barley grow?

Oats and beans and barley grow [hands rising upwards]

Oats and beans and barley grow

Nor you, nor I, nor anyone knows [shake head]

How oats and beans and barley grow [hands rising upwards]

First the farmer sows the seed [gestures as if to scatter seed]

Then he stands and takes his ease [hands on hips]

Stamps his feet and claps his hands

And turns around to view the land [turns around with hands shielding eyes]

Do you want a partner?

Do you want a partner?

For it you do

You must be true

And choose him very shortly

[children get into pairs and dance round in a circle]

I just happened to be browsing through a very old Scholastic book, and found this by chance.

You're too organised Hali: I wasn't thinking of harvest until this post...

I am not sure if this will be of any help as I do not know all the words, so if any one esle can finish the song I would be grateful:

I dig my garden, I dig, dig, dig (digging action)

I dig my garden, I dig it deep (keep digging)

I sow my seeds (scattering action)

And I watch them grow (grow as seed)

Along came a rabbit and OH NO! (hands over mouth)

He eats my carrots, munch, munch, munch (pretend to eat)

He eats my carrots, he eats the whole bunch.

Along came the farmer, and shoo! Shoo! shoo! (shoo action)

But the rabbit has gone, oh what shall I do? (hands held out in front)

I Plant a Little Seed (I'm a little tea pot)

I plant a little seed

In the cold, cold ground

Out comes the yellow sun

Big and round

Down comes the raindrops

Soft and slow

Up comes the flower

Grow, grow, grow.

Planting Flowers - (Frere Jacques)

Planting flowers, planting flowers

In the ground, in the ground

Water them and they grow

Water them and they grow

All around, all around.

Out in the Garden (Down by the Station)

Out in the garden, early in the morning

See the red tomatoes, all in a row

See the happy farmer coming out to pick them

Pick, pick, pick and off he goes

(Green beans - green cabbage - orange carrots - etc)

I went to the Garden - Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush)

I went to the garden and dug up the ground

Dug up the ground, dug up the ground

I went to the garden and dug up the ground

On Sunday in the morning

I went to the garden and raked the soil fine (Monday)

I went to the garden and sowed all my seeds (Tuesday)

I went to the garden and watered the ground (Wednesday)

I went to the garden and scared off the birds (Thursday)

I went to the garden and chased off the cats (Friday)

I went to the garden and picked up the slugs (Saturday)

I went to the garden and saw some green shoots (Sunday)

I went to the garden and picked some of my flowers, etc - some days in the mornings

(The last one sure has fast growing flowers!!!! ) :o

As I was doing some sorting, in preparation for moving, I came across some song sheets - one of which may (or may not) be of use to you.

Picking Up Conkers:

Picking up conkers, picking up conkers,

How many conkers have you got?

4 big prize ones, 6 small-sized ones,

1 little mouldy one and that's the lot.

Picking up acorns, picking up acorns,

How many acorns have you got?

5 good green ones, 4 old brown ones,

1 little wormy one and that's the lot.

Picking up fir cones, picking up fir cones,

How many fir cones have you got?

3 fat round ones, 2 old squashed ones,

One enormous one and that's the lot!

The actions are fairly self-explanatory: you pretend to pick up the conkers/acorns/fir cones; you hold up fingers to represent numbers and use arms (stretched wide) hands or fingers to show the size of the object.

Sorry I don't have a tune - I know it but am unable to communicate this to you!

I've just thought of another one!

4 seeds in a row

4 seeds in a row

One for the mouse

One for the crow

One to rot and one to grow.

Not sure about the tune and I have a feeling there should be more to it than that - but it's nice and short for littlies - and you can always sing it twice!

Love all the songs everybody

Chocolate girl - love your conker song it seems to fit to the tune of Winding the bobbin up - could that be the tune?

The tune for Oats and beans and barly grow is in an old copy of This little puffin not sure if it is in the revised and updated version.

KJH we finish the rabbit song -----------

I run down the garden, and shoo! Shoo! shoo! (shoo action)

But the rabbit will come back, oh what shall I do?

But the rabbit will come back, oh what shall I do?

Found this some where

I'm a little bean small and round,

Bury me deep under the ground. ( bend down into a ball)

Sprinkle on some water, ( children look up and 1 child or adult pretends to water the beans)

Some sunshine too. ( children crouched, do a sun ray movement with arms)

Watch me grow as tall as you. ( all stand and stretch up as high as they can).

sang to the tune of I'm a little teapot,

The flowers grow all around,

they start from seed deep underground,

we give them love & water & light,

then they appear and grow into sight.

they look so pretty and look so fine,

i grew these flowers,

they are mine.

this poem went home on a sticker stuck to the side of a pot which the children had sown from seed

Hi Hali - hope all went well

Ours is next week. I am using 2 songs from this thread -thanks folks again! My T.A also found the children really enjoy 'Old Macdonald had a farm' so we've changed animals to vegeables! - with a dig, dig here, and a pull, pull there or a dig, dig everywhere.
