I have to describe two activities that could be used with children to help them develop their emotional awareness skills, I was thinking of Circle Time but am stuck on another . Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks :o

Hi February - what age are the activities for?

What about choosing a story book with lots of emotions pictures (some of the Oxford Reading Tree books are quite good) Without reading the story look at the pictures with the children and discuss what is happening, how they are feeling etc. Afterwards you could go through the story with them and see if they can tell you any more about the story.

Or how about painting/drawing - think and ask about colours and what they can portray ie red=cross, blue = sad etc or paint faces - happy, sad, lonely, scared, silly etc

Or sequencing/matching pictures - why is someone happy/sad

Or looking in a mirror and making faces - you could paint their different expressions on the mirror

Hope this helps

Jo

Thanks for the link sunflower. We are not having a topic in pre-school when we return in September but will be concentrating on settling the children in and PSED until half term. The ideas on the website will be very useful.

Hi February -

In case you missed the six articles we have from Nicola Call on Emotional Competence, you might find them useful. Particularly the article on developing empathy, which you can find here.

Hope it helps! :)
