Getting In A Pickle About Baselines

We seem to be unable to decide how best to do our baselines. In the past we have observed for two weeks, made lots of post its and then made a judgement from there also taking into account where nursery judged them to be. However all the post it observations we make are actually doubles of what is already in their learning journals from nursery! So is it the best way to do things?!

Also does anyone ever judge children to be lower on entry to reception than they were on exit from nursery?

I'd take the nursery judgements and transfer them as your baseline. Children may not be demonstrating all the things they are capable of doing because of the transition to a new environment so it's important to have data of them at their most capable. Then you can concentrate on the children who may be new to your setting.

by the time our children leave nursery, having not done much in last week of term, then had 6 weeks off, then not being full time till mid september, that's 2 months off, and they always drop back a bit when reception assess them, but by end of september or early october they are back to where they were. they do daily counting/letters and sounds etc in nursery, then nothing much for 2 months, so it's no wonder!! also they need time to gain confidence and settle before they show full ability. trust your nursery, and just observe to see what their preferred learning styles and interests are, so you can paln for individualised learning
