I am the FS coordinator in our school. Our unit has 4 support staff and 3 teachers. I have never done Performance Management before but know that the new EYFS asks that staff have supervision. Is this the same as PM? The head has asked me to do PM for 3 staff members anyway so will this be in addition to the supervision I am supposed to do? Do I just do supervision with support staff or all teaching staff too? Can anyone point me in the direction os advice on what I do to support supervision, is there any books/documentation I can read in addition to EYFS? I am starting to panic!!!! Thanks in advance. :huh:

imo supervision is regular contact (probably off job ) to discusss their day to day attitudes and dispositions or to lead them in a particular path. Annual appraisals are also needed but these cover the next year and include the bigger picture items such as training , where they see themselves heading, what difficulties they have had in the year etc. It depends what you do and when you do performance management i would say, as to which of the two catagories it follows

I supervise my staff regularly ( supposed to be monthly in an ideal world :blink: ) and this is the format I use. It is adapted from a format our Early Years team drew up and I adapted it so can't take all the credit!

Supervision should provide opportunities for staff to:

• discuss any issues – particularly concerning children’s development or well-being;

• identify solutions to address issues as they arise; and

• receive coaching to improve their personal effectiveness.

We have been advising that the usual school processes of minimum termly progress reviews, regular developmental observations of all staff in the setting by senior staff and feedback plus performance management, plus the access to SENCos and other specialist staff for teachers and the typical processes for meeting with support staff to discuss problems as they arise in schools would probably more than cover the description of supervision in the framework.

If you click on the 'more reply options' box next to where the 'post' box is you can follow the instructions and it is pretty straightforward.

You'll see the 'attach files' boxes come up underneath where you type your message, click on 'browse' to look on your computer for the document you want to open, and then when the document title is shown in the box, click on 'attach this file'. Then click on 'add reply' in the normal way.

And that should be that. Or something very like it!

:1b Good luck!

Thanks RedJayne

Thought you might find this useful - taken from Working Together to Safeguard Children 2010.

Supervision should enable both supervisor and supervisee to reflect on, scrutinise and evaluate the work carried out, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the practitioner providing coaching, development and pastoral support.

Supervisors should be available to practitioners as an important source of advice and expertise, and may be required to endorse judgements at certain key points in time”
