something to do with subtraction perhaps? bopping on head how many left?

I have one of those blow up hammers you get in joke shops or at the fair - there is certainly a lot of bopping and fun with this!

maybe a game could be devised where they have to catch something in a net like foo foo and record how many they have netted?

What is your planned learning/next steps for the children in what area? - I find identifying the learning first helps, then deciding how the book can contextualise it, rather than trying to just generate activities.

Ofsted want to see progress in learning from activities matched to assessment: This is from the Good grade descriptor for EYFS inspections from Sept 2012:

"All practitioners have high expectations of all children based on accurate assessment of children’s prior skills, knowledge and understanding on entry to the setting. Practitioners complete regular and precise assessments of children and use these effectively to plan suitably challenging activities. They regularly listen perceptively to, carefully observe, and skilfully question children during activities in order to re-shape tasks and explanations to improve learning."

inadequate says: "Planning is not effective in matching activities to children’s needs. Observations and assessment are not consistent in quality and/or are not frequent or accurate enough to build on children’s progress."

Their focus is learning over time so an all singing all dancing session may not be enough now if they are to judge good. This is how they are shifting the focus across all inspection frameworks.

We use this story as a way to talk about behaviour and being kind to our friends. It's a good topic for all children at this time of the year.

Thanks apple - some great ideas there,

Catma - we have a real mixed bag at the moment - children are largely woking around the 30-50mth mark, although we have several

new starters who are in the 22-36 mth band. As an example we have some children who are using 1:1 corr, but not got number names in order, others who don't have 1:1 but do know number names, and others who are recognising numbers, and counting reliably to 10...

Really looking for actvities accross all areas as the children are so excited by this book we wanted to capture that interest. We have noticed that all the characters in the story are either "happy" or "sad" according to our children, so we're going to do a bit of work on feelings - looking in mirrors to make angry, excited, scared faces etc...

Thanks again for the input so far!

To challenge the children with more secure understanding of quantity you could create some games where they have to develop use and apply subtraction skills? Working out how many fieldmice left if LRFF bops x many. They could record their ideas in their own ways as a record of their thinking. Use dice to see how many field mice and how many to bop. And so on...!

Bringing in a real rabbit to care for.. would they bop that on the head? Don't forget risk assessing of course!
